Does Synchromesh change a final gears ratio if the final gear is .783 ("taller" than direct 1:1)?
Upon reading up on synchromesh, I am baffled.If 5th or final gear is deeper than 1:1 direct to final hypoid drive, I am certain the same rpm on engine at 65mph is not far from that of 80mph..The same transmission on higher power could take the same final ratios to an even higher speed with minimal rpm change.How does the gear stay that tall- seemingly until engine runs out of power before the transmission lets it rev too high.I encounter it all the time, would love an explanation. My particular example will climb to 80 over 15-20 miles on the highway within 1000 rpm!

inertia...after you reach 80 mph the engine is not straining that much more than 65 mph but it is turning 16.3% faster. Check it out. Record your rpm at 65 mph. Add 16.3% to that. The number should match your tach at 80 mph. The additional 15 mph should raise the rpm less than 500 more than at 65mph.
Synchromesh transmission has nothing to do with your question. It allows effective downshifting without double clutching.
