Why do bike mechanics shaft you when they know you are lacking in knowledge?
Just gave a mechanic my crank and gears to change the bearings & seals.
I put it back together and it would not go into gear.
He said he wanted to pick it up.
I stripped in again, gave it to him on a Monday morning which he wasn't counting on, then he just turned a twisted spring like metal strip back into place which was preventing it going into gear. (Trick of the trade)
He wanted to take my whole bike in and string me along and charge me what ever he wanted I think.
He has also quoted me £101 for piston kit. They are £24 online and the small end bearing ir £9.95
"You" put it together and it didn't go into gear.
He turned a twisted spring.
Obviously you did something wrong.
I always recommend to people when getting engine work, to bring in the entire bike (not just the engine).
This way everything will be working when you pick it up.
Any mistakes made by the mechanic, he will have to repair it before you take possession of the bike.
Bringing in just the engine, a mechanic can claim you did something wrong.
A piston kit consists of piston, rings, piston pin, bearing, 2 circlips. head gasket, base gasket, exhaust gasket.
Add all of that together and add tax, shipping & handling.
