The ever-escalating cost of building or buying a hot rod is leaving more and more would-be hot rodders behind. This book will get those hopefuls off the sidelines by showing how a hot rod can be built for less than the cost of, say, a new Hyundai.Author Dennis Parks documents his own project--building a quintessentially cool Model T roadster from a "Track-T" kit--showing in step-by-step detail how to turn a pile of parts into a rockin hot rod. He provides a detailed, easy-to-follow guide for building a car of your own.The advice and instructions cover every aspect of an affordable hot rod build, from establishing the target vehicle and budget, to finding parts, building the car, and fine tuning the finished vehicle on the road. With Parks' money-saving tips and photo-supported how-to sequences, virtually anyone with minimal mechanical skills and the will to use them can be sure of building their hot rod right, and for the right price. The book also includes a full resource guide and recommendations for further reading. |
Here are some more information for Rat Rod Project:

Clean, Painted, and Ready to go in. Now that everything is ready to go in, lets assemble our engine and trans.
Engine
Our Chevy 350 came complete from oil pan to carb and was even broken in. Distributor was also installed so we need to be careful not to hit the firewall when installing. Now is the time to install our block hugger headers and spark plugs. Wires can go on after the engine is in. We installed our flywheel with new grade 8 bolts.
Transmission
Our trans came with a 1500-1800 stall converter as this is destined to be a reliable daily driver, not a drag racing Hot Rod. We installed a new factory trans mount as it will work correctly with the new crossmember.
The marriage
We mated our engine and trans keeping in mind not to force anything. We put a bit of grease on the center of the torque converter to aid in installation. Prior to bolting trans to engine, make sure the torque converter spins free and is not bound up. Then bolt the trans to engine, and then torque converter to flywheel. In doing this, you will be assured that everything lines up correctly. Trans linkage will be hooked up later once drivetrain is bolted in.
In it goes
Be sure to reuse the engine leveler we used to remove the old engine. Especially now as everything is pretty and shiny. There is more than sufficient room and what a great final product it will be. Looks like a flathead lead sled, just isn't! Make sure to get all your bolts started before final tightening. Note: Make sure torque tube and drive shaft are removed prior to installing modern motor and trans. You will not have room and the new driveshaft is completely different.
The bolt-ons go on
Now we can install the bolt-ons. Starter can go in, front engine pulleys and belts, alternator, spark plug wires. There really isnt too much. Just remember, take your time, do it right, do it once, do it nice! At this point you need to figure out what to do with your cooling. We opted for a new aluminum radiator and a separate trans cooler. Our new aluminum radiator has the correct inlet and outlet necks in the correct Chevy locations.
Gas and Go
Gas pedal linkage is an upgrade to Lokar. It is a universal fit and works well. Same with the shifter. Since it is an automatic, we floor mounted the shifter and even used his shifter knob off of the old three speed to give it the original look. The kickdown cable is attached to the carb via a universal mount kit.
Next time: We prepare for wiring and rear end.

Rat Rod Versus Hot Rod and Yes There is a Difference
While there should not be any confusion between a true rat rod and a hot rod there seems to be many who are getting them mixed up. Within the hot rod crowd even mentioning the word RAT in their circle is a big no no for many reasons but mostly because the hot rodder group tend to have a higher end taste than most rat rodders do in general.
A ratrod in general has many qualities that are exactly opposite of what a true hotrod should have and many works in progress tend to be generalized as a rat car or rat truck for one reason or another. You can tell for the most part the subtle differences between a work in progress muscle car styled hot rod versus rat rods and it lies mainly in the details of the work.
No matter which scene you might be in or thinking of joining there will always be those who dislike another style of rod just like those who have an issue with ford or chevy. In the scene many people will brand their identity to the make, model or style of their ride and those who trash talk others are mainly doing it out of fear, embarrassment or their own insecurities and nothing more.
Throwing around the rat rod word in a hot rodders backyard can end up in an arguement even though we all can agree with how childish that may seem but to those who take their cars, their scene and their rods seriously, it is a big deal and you should at least be aware of what words come out of your mouth and when.
You can search for both rod types whether rat or hot through any search engine and don't forget to do an image search as well. See how many you know as a true rat or if it is a project vehicle on its way into the hot rod hall of fame. Don't let price fool you because you can drop a decent amount in either scene depending on what frame and model you start with as well as what stage of completion the ride is in.

How to build a fast 302 motor for my 37 ford pickup rat rod?
I am almost done with my rat rod project and its appearance but now want start on my motor. Any one who has ideas and names of parts that i need, go ahead and post them ill take everything into account.
take it to a machinist n have them to shave the heads n bore ur block 40 or 60 over depending on ur spacific block. use lightning pistons they r made of better metal n dont wear like other leading pistons
a stage 2 or 3 cam depending on what u want 341crank to give ur piston a shorter stroke therefore riv's faster n take off quicker hotrod spark plugs n wires to give it plenty of fire a cid box instead of a coil jegs performance jets to put in a duel line holly or eldebrock carb high rise intake shory headers if its a automatic a stall torque converter with a hurst slap stic n that all should be more than ur rat rod can handle also smart thinking going with ford thats all i have good luck
