A run flat tire is designed to keep running even if there is a puncture and all the air escapes from the tire. There are three different technologies that make this possible. They all have their pros and cons. The pro, which outweighs the cons, is that you can keep driving on the flat and so will not get stranded. The cons are different for each of the different types of run flat tires.
The self supporting type of run flat tire has sidewalls of much greater strength than conventional tires. This allows the sidewalls to bear the weight of the car if the tire loses air pressure. They also have a specially designed bead around the edge of the tire ensure a firm grip on the wheel rim even when the tire is running under inflated. The negatives are that the thick hard sidewall gives a much harsher ride than the softer conventional ones. The tires are also heavier, adversely impacting fuel efficiency. And finally, it is not advisable to drive more than 50 miles, at reduced speeds, on a flat or there is a risk that the tire may be seriously damaged.
In the case of auxiliary supported run flat tires, when the tire loses pressure, the tread of the flat tire rests on a support ring that is attached to the wheel. This allows the wheels to take the load off the flat and allows continued driving. On the pro side, since this system does not require harder and heavier tires, there is no negative impact on rides quality or fuel economy. The con is that these special wheels are expensive and also require special tires.
The third type of run flat tire is the self sealing kind. These have a special lining of sealant under the tread which automatically seal small holes up to 3/16" as soon as they occur. After the foreign object is detected and removed from the tire, the lining again seals the hole. With this kind of run flat tire a driver may never know that a tire has been punctured. And that could be a problem since if a nail is allowed to remain in the tire for a long time; it may create a larger hole, which the sealant cannot handle.

anyone know about wrapping exhaust pipes on a car?
wrapping pipes is really popular with the old school scoots/bobbers/whatever .... but ive started to see a few rat rods in magazines and stuff that have the headers wrapped.. just wondering if it actually has the same effect as it does on a bike? im assuming yes.. but just curious if anyone else has seen it and knows what im talking about
The pipe wrapping serves two purposes.
1: It serves to keep under hood temps down.
2: It also helps retain the heat in the headers, because the hotter the exhaust gases are the faster they flow, the faster they flow the more power you are going to free up.
