Canadian filmmaker Ron Mann has specialized in making counter-cultural documentaries since 1978, and Tales of the Rat Fink is his masterpiece. Rarely has the combination of technique and subject matter been presented with such symbiotic perfection, and Mann's tribute to Ed "Big Daddy" Roth will appeal to anyone who recalls the glory days of hot rods and custom cars. Roth pioneered customizing in the late '50s, taking his cue from the legendary Von Dutch (whose automotive pinstripes "flowed like jazz") to become the first hot-rodder to sculpt custom cars out of fiberglass, the first to airbrush custom "monster" designs on T-shirts, and the inventor of Rat Fink, the "anti-Mickey Mouse" adopted as the drooling mascot of rodders, surfers, model-building hobbyists and assorted misfits throughout the '60s. Roth's best-known custom cars--The Outlaw, The Beatnik Bandit, Mysterion and others--remain timeless classics of southern California's custom-car culture, and they're all shown here on dazzling display. It's a pity Roth (1932-2001) didn't live to witness Mann's exquisite collaboration with animator Mike Roberts, whose dynamic contributions bring Rat Fink to life in all his wretched glory. John Goodman splendidly narrates as a posthumous Roth, looking back at his creations as numerous pop-cultural icons (Ann-Margret, the Smothers Brothers, and author Tom Wolfe, who first brought Roth to the world's attention) lend their voices to custom cars that "talk" with flashing headlights, similar to (but more reverent than) Pixar's Cars. It's a perfect way of honoring Roth, the culture he created, and the enduring legacy of his "weirdo" ingenuity. Mann's playful tribute makes it perfectly clear that Roth and Rat Fink embody a creative spirit that will live forever. --Jeff Shannon Highlighted by inventive animated sequences, this entertaining documentary examines the life of cartoonist, custom car builder and cultural icon Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. Best known for his illustrations of hot-rodding rodent Rat Fink, Roth became an influential figure amongst automotive enthusiasts and counterculture artists of the 1960s and beyond. With the voices of John Goodman, Ann-Margret, Jay Leno, Brian Wilson, "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening, and more. 100 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1; bonus footage; deleted scenes; music video; theatrical trailer. |

Here are some more information for Rat Hot Rod:

What exactly is a rat rod? It is term used to describe the old or traditional way most hot rods are created today. The most common understanding when one mentions the word hot rod - it is that a car that has been modified so that its speed is increased and it is primarily used for racing. It is the same idea but without any common or notions of what it should look like. A hot rod is always unique and reflects the style and tastes of the one designing it.
It is also known as a vehicle that is built for racing since it uses a barebones type configuration. A rat rod shouldn't be necessarily shiny or pretty. In fact the older the rat rod is, the better it can perform. In building a rat rod, it really takes time and effort but is worth the sweat put into it.
Things you might need: a car and perhaps it inner working parts. Please note that it can have many parts from different cars. You should also have an engine, a chassis, exhaust manifolds, pistons, and other parts that make the engine work and the car to move. Although you can swap parts, its best to get the parts that are already working to save you time.
Steps to building your own rat rod:
Step One: Choosing the right frame. You can use whatever car frame you want to use. There is no rule against this. Most people like to use old designs since it is cheaper then buying a new one. If you plan to race it, you should choose a light frame to make the car move faster. You may even choose to remove or add any accessories to meet your needs.
Step Two: Selecting an engine. A fast rat rod needs a strong engine. It's always a good idea to get the largest engine that can fit in your engine bay. Some races make the frame a bit bigger to accommodate the huge engine. Any engine will suffice. It doesn't have to be a new one as long as it is a working one. Look for great deals at the junkyard. Sometimes the dealer would be willing to sell it off for a low rate. If you want to race your rat rod, remember that raw engine power is the key.
Step Three: Install the essentials and strip the interiors. If your aim is to race, then only the basic like axle transmission, wheels and other crucial controls will suffice. Any excess items like spare seats, excess consoles areas will all have to go. This is to make the car lighter.
Step Four: Wear the tires and rims. Choose tires that can last long and endure short races. The tires don't have to be the best just as long as they don't melt quickly under stress. Likewise the rims should be in good order so that turns in the race course can be handled.
Step Five: Test the it. Always test before racing. Most rat rods are not allowed on most freeways so you would have to haul it off to a nearby track and have it tested there before the final race.
Lastly, enjoy racing the hot rod for it's bound to bring you much joy and pride in creating something so race admired. In short, that is how you can effectively build a rat rod.

Autorama to be Held on March 9
The time for gear heads and customizers to show off their wares is fast approaching once again. For the 55th year, the Michigan Hot Rod Association will be sponsoring the AutoRama. It is also the time for car fans to take a peek on what these mechanical geniuses have been doing behind the closed doors of their garages for the days between these AutoRama events. The AutoRama, known to be the place to show off one’s automotive creation, will once again occupy the Cobo Hall in Detroit, Michigan from the 9th of March until the 11th of the same month.
What is known to be the most prestigious event of this kind will surely be a place where customizers will show off their one-of-a-kind creations. The only car show to give the AutoRama a run for its money is the Oakland Roadster Show which is held in California. But the car show being held in Motor City is regarded to be the best place to showcase one’s creations.
Car fans are invited to the show to witness some of the best customized car in the planet. Not only cars are going to be presented during the show though. Motorcycles and odd vehicles are also part of the show. These vehicles are so unique that they surely defy categorization. These are the fruits of the countless hours of labor put into the construction of such vehicles by aficionados. These machines will be competing for recognition and cash prizes during the event, not to mention huge amount of bragging rights.
Those who love vehicles will surely enjoy the sight of the beautiful machines which will be present at the event. About three quarters of a million feet square will be dedicated to showcasing each and every creation at the show. The AutoRama has been known to be the place where unique and the coolest vehicles hang out. And during the event, aficionados can take advantage of the chance to see such gorgeous machines.
There are four different general types of entries in the said event. The first one is full customs. These are vehicles which have been modified thoroughly that it does not resemble the specific make and mode of the car it is created from. Aside from increasing the aesthetic value of these full customs, their performance are also made better and made to last longer like the improvements made on Volvo 740 parts.
The second category is mild customs. These are vehicles which have undergone modifications but still resembles the original car is some ways.
The third type is rat rods. These are the cars - the bodywork looks neglected and it is sporting rust as its paintjob. But these cars’ underpinnings like the transmission and braking systems are upgraded. Unlike full customs and mild customs that are trailered to the show, these cars are driven to the show. The concept is a response to the pricy custom cars most common on cars shows. These cars are built by hand by people who own them using an assortment of vintage parts. Sometimes, a rat rod will sport different components from different models and from different makes. These parts are fitted together using the ingenuity of its builder.
The fourth class is restored classics. Unlike the rat rods whose bodywork is not given much attention, these cars are fully restored classic cars. This is a favorite among car enthusiasts since it is a symbol of powerful gas-guzzlers produced by car manufacturers in the past.
This year’s AutoRama will be attended by different celebrities. Some of the notable personalities who are scheduled to make an appearance at the show are Barry McGuiar, the Car Crazy host; Nate Robertson, the Tigers pitcher; and Spongebob Squarepants.

1966 VW Bettle meets Detroit power?
I'm 16 years of age and I'm looking to do my first major Hot (Rat) Rod and I have a '66 Bug that I saved from 12 years of field sitting with a trailer and $200 bucks. The dude I bought it from said with some oil fresh gas and a battery that it would start right up. WHAT A LOAD OF BULL SH** So I stumbled upon a Chevy small block in working order and I want to mold them together to make a rat rod type...I've seen this done alot and I was wondering how I do this myself. I heard of people taking domestic frames and just topping it off with the VW and many other ways I was hoping you guys could tell me the easiest and cheapest way to do this I'm 16 so life is kinda short in the financial area. Help me out
