Dodge performance chips improve the amount of power you get from your engine. However you can get even more performance from Dodge performance chips by making additional changes to your vehicle.
How Dodge Performance Chips Give Your Car More Power
Unless you are driving a pretty old Dodge, your car has electronic fuel injection controlled by computer chip. It measures a number of factors such as the incoming air temperature and determines how much fuel to feed your engine. This means even if your foot doesn't move on the gas pedal, the amount of gas getting to the pistons can rise and fall.
The problem is the chip you got on your car hasn't been optimized for best performance. Dodge performance chips are easy to install and work by changing the data inputs your fuel system receives. It can manipulate the fuel system into thinking it needs more or less fuel so you can get more horsepower and greater fuel efficiency. However you can make a good thing even better by improving how your engine burns fuel.
Reduce Incoming Air Resistance
To burn the fuel, the engine has to suck air into the engine. Dodge performance chips can send more fuel to the engine but without enough air, that fuel won't burn efficiently. Modern car designs balance a lot of factors such as cost, aesthetics and fuel efficiency and you may not have the optimal air intake system for best engine performance.
Changes that reduce air resistance of the intake mean each stroke of the piston can pull in more air and burn more fuel for the same effort. Air coming in through polished intake manifolds experiences less friction along the walls. Shorter intake tube or wider air filters also reduce resistance and allow more air into your fuel-hungry engine.
Reduce Outgoing Exhaust Resistance
The entire airflow system includes not just the intake manifold. If the air has nowhere to go when pistons exhaust it, the system backs up and engine performance suffers. Low efficiency exhaust bogs down the whole system and your air intake can't work as well.
Small tail pipes or cheap mufflers are two common sources of exhaust problems. They create a lot of friction in the exhaust flow and slow down engine performance. High performance cars have large exhaust pipes to reduce friction. They use free flowing mufflers to minimize the amount of resistance air will experience passing through. Any of these changes reduce back pressure and allow the entire air flow system through your engine to move more smoothly.
Dodge performance chips are an inexpensive way to realize as much as 50 more horsepower from your engine. Your final results will depend to some extent on how efficiently your intake and exhaust systems work. You will get good improvements using Dodge performance chips in stock vehicles, but add a little more work and your vehicle will really scream down the street.

Cold Air Intakes: A Vital Part of Your Car
Air intakes are vital to your car. Their main function is to make the air that is going into the car and make it cooler. That's why it's also known as a cool air intake. The air needs to become cooler to make more power of the internal-combustion engine. The intakes also make the car sound a lot better and look more stylish. Therefore, you can have them customized to your wants and needs.
K and N Engineering was the first company to make air intakes in the 1980's and by doing so, they are nicknamed as the creators of the aftermarket solution. It was first made using plastic where a tube was made with a filter with holes.
Air intakes improved dramatically in the 1990's when companies used mass marketing all over the world including Japan to make it more accessible to their consumers.
The details of how air intakes work are quite simple. Cold air is heavier in volume. Combustion needs oxygen so the more oxygen a car has, the more power it will have as well. The creators of air intakes thought that the more cooler air around the car, the better it will be for combustion since there would be more oxygen.
The temperature is higher where combustion takes place. Therefore, cooler air is needed to make the engine more powerful. More airflow is achieved through a bigger diameter in the tube to make less friction. The inside must be smooth as well to reduce the friction and air resistance.
Heat filters are created to separate the air filter from the rest of the area that has combustion. Most of this air is taken from the front side of the vehicle. Some companies are making these air intakes out of carbon fiber which creates a stylish product. It aids in insulation and reduces the weight since carbon fiber weighs less. Yet, it can be extremely expensive to produce.
Complete Cold Air or CCA was created to take air from the sides of the hood scoop and wheel wells. High velocity hair is found in these areas and with all the pressure, the temperature goes down easily. It is also known as ram-air intake since it is mostly used in race cars and motorcycles.
Air intakes are great but you must watch out on rainy days when you may experience hydrolock. This is when water goes into the air intake tube giving your car less horsepower. The water will not compress. This is when a hydro-shield should be used.
Overall, air intakes are a wonderful thing to have in your car that can be customized to increase the performance. For new intakes, check out your online auto parts dealer or ask your local mechanic for tips.

Would fabricating a homemade ram air intake be a good idea?
I took a heater duct hose (about 4'') and ran it into my intake box. My only concern would be rain.
This type of "ram" will be fine. You really need to put a type of screen over it so it doesnt suck up anything large.I had a ram air on one of my old mustangs. After about 2 months of driving, the entire air box was filled with bugs and leaves!! I dont know how the car still ran! You can use the type of screen found on like on old screen door. This stuff works well.Good luck!
