New Steel Racing Driveshaft 2 1/2 New Steel Racing Driveshaft 2 1/2" O.D. Any Length 27"- 62 1/2"
Sale Price: $179.99

Southwest Speed refers to these driveshafts as the '2 1/2" Outside Diameter' series of driveshafts; as they've continued to make them longer & longer, they've begun using larger diameter tubing on some of those longer shafts; At 50", they step up to 2 3/4", At 58", they step up to 3", At 60 1/2", they step up to 3 1/2". All have .065" wall DOM tubing. Includes: *New 27 spline transmission yoke. This yoke will fit any transmission with a 27 spline output shaft, including GM Powerglide, Muncie 4 speed, Saginaw 3 & 4 speed, Borg Warner T-4, Borg Warner GM T-5, GM T-350, GM TH-350, GM T-56, 700R, 700R4, 4L60, 4L60E, 4LL0E, 200 Metric, Brinn, Bert, Falcon, & many more. *Both front & rear new u-joints, which are 1 1/16" diameter cups (Measurement C picture 4 above) by 3 7/32" wide (Measurement B). On the rear of the driveshaft, these shafts will fit the 1310 rear end (or pinion) yoke. If you aren't sure if this is the yoke you have, the easiest way to make sure is measure to see if the 1 1/16" x 3 7/32" u-joint will fit it. 2 Different Ways to Measure for the Length *Measuring your old driveshaft if it is available is the easiest way. Measure from the center of the u-joint cup to the center of the u-joint cup (shown in picture 2 above). Using this measurement, we have every length from 27" to 62 1/2". *If your old driveshaft isn't available or this shaft will be installed in a new car, you can use this method. "A" - Measure from the rear of the tailhousing on your transmission to the front of the rear end (or pinion) yoke (shown in picture 3 above). This measurement needs to be taken with the car at "ride height"; you cannot get a proper measurement with the car jacked up in any way . If you use this method to determine the length, just make sure to let us know at checkout that "the A dimension is ___". Using this measurement, we have every length from 29" to 65 1/2" in stock.

People who do not have a driver's license envy those who have and could drive around any time they want to. But even those who do not have a driver's license may drive too! It is easy to construct a go cart which can be driven around one's backyard. Here are the steps and tips on how to build a go cart.

The materials needed to build a go cart include a petrol tank, an engine, a go pedal, a break pedal, a bar stock measuring 6 feet x ½ inch, a round steel barstock measuring 6 feet x ¾ inch, a square tubing measuring 30 feet x 1 inch, a steering shaft, bearings, a drive shaft, bolts, a chain for the sprocket, a gear and a handbreak, a motor, a steering wheel, wheels, seat, metal, and welder.

Before we start on how to build a go cart, let's offer some tips first such as the importance of hiring a welder if we are not very knowledgeable on how to weld. Second, it must be remembered that the size of the go cart depends on the age of the user. A go cart measuring 30 inches wide x 50 inches long is suitable for young go cart drivers, whereas a go cart measuring 40 inches wide x 72 inches long is suitable for adults. Another very good tip is that some of the materials needed to make a go cart may be obtained from a junk go cart or an old lawnmower.

The first step on how to build a go cart is for the metal tubing to be cut in accordance with the owner's design. The cut pieces of the metal tubing should then be welded. One tip is to make use of gussets at the corners in order to ensure increased strength.

The next step on how to build a go cart is the need for the steering linkage to be assembled. The steel rod measuring ½ inch must be used for linkages while the steel rod measuring ¾ inch must be used for axles. Bends of up to 90 degrees need to be done, therefore it is important to heat the steel with the use of a torch. It must be remembered that steering is important therefore constructing this part of the go cart should be done with utmost care.

The next step on how to build a go cart is to use a straight steel rod measuring ¾ inch to build the rear axle. The drive pulley must be attached to the axle before the latter is mounted in the bushings.

A flat piece of steel plate measuring 3/16 inches must then be welded to the rear frame. This is necessary in mounting the engine. The throttle cable must then be attached to the hand throttle.

The last step on how to build a go cart is to use metal or plywood lumber to construct the floor boards as well as the seat of the go cart.

A rag joint refers to certain flexible joints found on automobiles. They are typically found on steering shafts that connect the steering wheel to the steering gear input shaft, usually at the steering gear end. They provide a small amount of flex for a steering shaft within a few degrees of the same plane as the steering gear input shaft. It also provides some damping of vibration coming from the steering system, providing some isolation for the steering wheel.
This type of joint was also used on drive shafts of 1960s race cars, later being replaced by the constant-velocity joint or driveshafts with pairs of universal joint. Rear-wheel drive cars have commonly used a lengthwise propeller shaft with a rubber doughnut joint at the gearbox end (limited movement) and a universal joint at the rear axle (greater movement). This gives articulation where needed, but also stops some of the vibration being transmitted into the body.
The joint consists of a piece of doughnut shaped rubber with reinforcing cords vulcanized in it, similar to a tire. This disc is bolted or riveted to flanges mounted on the ends of the shafts to connect the steering wheel shaft to the steering gear. The ragged cords can be seen on the edge of this piece of rubber, hence the term "rag joint". The bolt holes themselves are often reinforced by steel tubes moulded into the doughnut.
The origins of this form of universal joint are from early vehicles that used a disk of thick leather as a similar flexible joint. These were used into the 1920s. As rubber technology improved (particularly for its resistance to spilled mineral oils), it was possible to replace the leather by something longer-lasting. An older vehicle with loose steering or "play in the steering wheel" is many times because of a worn out rag joint. One can reach inside the cab and wiggle the steering wheel while watching the rag joint move without the input shaft moving, this is unnacceptable and needs to be replaced.
