LIONS THE GREATEST DRAG STRIP (Part 3/1967-'72) by Don Gillespie: Third and final video documentary on sport's most famous drag strip (Long Beach, Calif.); rare photos, film, interviews with leading pioneers. Sale Price: $22.95 |
|
Third and final episode (110-minutes) on historic Long Beach, CA drag strip features 40-plus interviews with top pioneers, including; Don Garlits, Ed Iskenderian, Hayden Proffitt, Gas Ronda, Bill "Maverick" Golden, Robert Balogh, Carl Olson, Sush Matsubara, Tom McEwen, Pat Foster, Tommy Ivo, Dale Pulde, Don Long, C. J. Hart, Larry Sutton, etc. Begins with nitro racing's version of a heavyweight bout, as Top Fuel dragsters fight the growing trend of AFX and early Funny Cars. Huge meets ensued. Innovation led to quicker ET's - and speeds. Funny Cars roared into the 7-second zone. Top Fuelers blazed past 220 miles-per-hour. With increased performance came danger. Straining clutches and superchargers resulted in spectacular fires, wheel-stands and crashes, with drivers in extreme peril. One of the more dramatic segments depicts the AHRA Grand American in early 1970, when Top Fuel legend "Big Daddy" Don Garlits lost part of his right foot in a horrific starting line transmission explosion. Graphic film of the accident surfaced only recently. Garlits recounts the incident, plus his equally stunning return months later with a rear-engine dragster that likewise changed the sport forever. Weekly campaigners included Jr. Fuel and Gas Dragsters, AA/Gas Supercharged, AA/Fuel Altered, Injected Funny Cars, plus wild exhibition vehicles. Manager C.J. Hart departed in 1971, replaced by innovator, Steve Evans, who switched from AHRA to NHRA sanction, and produced events like the giant Grand Premier, which saw the track's largest number of incidents. When noise complaints spelled the end in December 1972, Lions held the racing equivalent of Woodstock, with "The Last Drag Race", a colossal, fitting, yet tear-filled end to one of the sport's most historic, and revered tracks. |

Featuring footage and history from the hot rod era, Ingenuity In Action explains how to prepare for and enter a drag race or car show. The film focuses on the history of hot rods and hot rodding, as well as the dedicated gearheads who travel cross country for American hot rod events, car shows, and drag racing. Made popular during the 1950's, American hot rods have become an important part of automobile history. Established hot rod personalities, like racecar driver Chuck Jones, appear in the film. The film also describes how as it became more popular, hot rodding became almost a cult: followers consider classic cars their idols. Vintage street rods and custom hot rods are everywhere in this film, which is a must for car enthusiasts and anyone interested in the drag racing history. Ingenuity In Action is a great mix of 1950's automobile history and white hot classic drag strip racing! |

Motorsports marketing does not have to cost your company an arm and a leg. It can be a great way to get your brand in front of the viewing public both locally and nationally. A good motorsports marketing agency can help you find local and national sponsorship opportunities, and most of all, they can help you find drivers that don't just know how to drive, but know how to promote products. After all, this is about promoting your brand, right?
First, you need to decide what kind of exposure you need. If you are a small local business, then you obviously just want to target local teams that race in your area. Another great place to look for local motorsports marketing opportunities is with the advertising departments at the race track as just about all of them sell track side ads.
If you are looking for national exposure then you would want to look at getting sponsorships in racing circuits such as NHRA, ARCA, Campign World, or a similar circuit that does not require a multi-million dollar budget like NASCAR, but still gets you great brand exposure. You should expect to pay more for a racing series that has television exposure, but of course, this means you can expect more people to see your brand. As with any branding effort, it takes more than a one time deal to become well known, but one time deals can go far especially when combined with some good PR or bundled with additional marketing services.
There are many variables within a motorsports marketing campaign as well which is why you can often negotiate a great deal if you have a little know how. For example, a campaign could just include on car exposure which means if you sponsor a winning driver, you get more branding, or it could include a host of additional options such as transporter wrapping (the transporter is the tractor trailer that carries the car to and from the races ) which can give you lots of great exposure to more than just the racing community. Also, a good motorsports marketing agency will always want to make the event news worthy, so you should make sure that at least a news release is a part of the deal. Press will benefit both the racing team and your business, so there is no reason for them not to want to do it.
I hope this has been helpful, and I look forward to seeing your company logo at the racetrack!

Drag Racing
Drag racing is one of the most dangerous and deadly hobbies around the United States and the world. Drag racing is illegal in most areas of the country and is done late at night on long stretches of road between two usually inexperienced drivers. Inexperienced means that they are not professional race car drivers. There is legal drag racing in the United States and it takes place on a safe race track. Two vehicles race down a long track with a set distance at top speed and deploy a parachute at the end of the race to help with the breaking process.
The National Hot Rod Association, also known as the NHRA, is in charge of overseeing the majority of drag races in the United States. The second largest racing organization is the International Hot Rod Association, also known as the IHRA. There are five classes in drag racing in the NHRA and the IHRA. They are the Top Fuel Dragster, the Top Fuel Funny Car, the Pro Modified, the Pro Stock and the Pro Stock Bike. The latter is a heavily modified motorcycle and is only raced in the NHRA. Some unprofessional yet popular classes are the Super Stock, the Sport Compact, the Top Sportsman, the Pro FWD and the Top Alcohol Dragster.
Here is a brief list of terms and their definitions regarding drag racing from Drag Racing Made Easy's website:
•Beam-starting line electric eye controlling "pre-staged" and "staged" lights
•Blow-supercharge; wreck. Said of an engine.
•Digger-dragster (as distinct from a bodied car or flopper)
•Flopper-Funny Car, short for "fender flopper." Coined by dragster crews in the late 1960s to separate Funny Cars, which had fiberglass bodies with fenders, from dragsters. Erroneously attributed to flip-top bodies of Funny Cars.
•Fuel-mix of methanol and nitromethane ("pop", nitro); race class using it
•Holeshot-getting a significant advantage off the starting line. The other driver gets "holeshotted" or "left at the tree". A "holeshot win" is any win in a heads-up class where a slower car beats a faster car because of better reaction time.
•Hook Up-Good traction between tires and track resulting in increased acceleration and reduced slipping or smoking of tires.
•Nitro-nitromethane (sometimes incorrectly used to refer to nitrous oxide)
•Overdrive-The ratio between the revolutions of the supercharger to the revolutions of the engine, controlling amount of boost; see underdrive
•Rail-dragster (as distinct from bodied car or flopper). From the exposed frame rails of early cars.
•Slingshot-early front-engined dragster, named for the driving position behind the rear wheels (erroneously attributed to launch speed)
•Top end-finish line of strip; high part of engine's rev band.
•Traction bars-rear struts fixed to rear axle to keep rear axle from twisting, causing wheel hop and loss of traction; also called slapper bars.
•Wheelie bars-rear struts fixed to rear axle, which protrude out to rear of car to help prevent car's front from rasing too high or flipping over on launch.

if a funny car and a jet funny car?
were to race which one would win? this race must take place on a non nhra track due to speed restrictions on the jet funny car. john force tryed it once and the jet car was out front but had a flame out. so who do you think would win???
I have ben to a few of these exhibition races over the years. The jet car. Once they get rolling I remember one time the jet went through the traps at 376 mph! Literally blew the funyy car off the track, he bounced off the wall.
I saw John Force and the jet. Was at Firebird in Phoenix,.
I have seen top fuel dragsters against jets. Same but closer, jet's still win unless an arrangement was made between the two(of course we wouldn't be told).
