With the high price of gas these days, many consumers have decided that owning and driving an electric vehicle will be more efficient and cheaper to run over the long haul. If you decided to build your own, there are plenty of resources available to help you understand and work through the process of converting a gas vehicle into an electric vehicle.

If you are one of those unfortunate souls that have to commute a long ways back and forth to work, an electric vehicle may not suit your needs because on average these vehicles run from 30 to 70 miles each day. Other factors such as the driving conditions, the weight of the vehicle and the quality of the battery will determine how many miles you can drive. You also have to consider how you will be recharging the batteries. If you live in your own home with a garage, then charging the batteries is not a problem. However, if you live in an apartment complex with no garage, it maybe a little tougher to charge the batteries every night.

Some Important Considerations

First thing you have to consider is what type of car you want to use to build your own electric vehicle. Smaller cars would be more ideal, but bigger cars can be used as well. You should also consider using a car that has a manual four speed or five speed transmission, since standards are more efficient than automatics. Interestingly, since electric motors are so deficient, shifting gears up and down constantly won't happen as much as it does in a gas fueled engine.

When building your own, there will be additional weight added to your car. That weight can be anywhere from 200 to 500 extra pounds. Just make sure that the car you picked can handle the extra weight with the modifications and isn't completely ridiculous and is well within reason.

A few more things to keep in mind that are optional when building your electric vehicle is the power steering and air-conditioning. The power steering would definitely require another motor to make the power steering pump work. The air conditioning will put a huge drain on the batteries, but you can hookup the air conditioning using a special magnet system to work the compressor.

In the end, there are plenty of resources out there to help you do the job right when building your own electric vehicle. As time passes and with the rising cost of fuel, these and hybrids will become more and more popular. Chances are the price of gas is going to continue to rise and for a lot of people, gas is almost not affordable. So going ahead and take a look at building your own; you may be surprised at how easy it is to convert your gas guzzler into and electric vehicle. The money you will save on fuel will pay for the cost of the conversion in very short order and there will be less pollution in the air too.

Power Steering Fluid: Monthly Automotive Maintenance Part 3

This is the third installment of our automotive maintenance “How to” series, and again we will be learning about fluids. Performing monthly routine checks on the fluids in your car will save you money, time, and stress when it is time to take your car in for its regular tune-ups. Keeping your vehicle in good condition will also help you avoid situations such as breakdowns and accidents.

Most of the fluids that your car needs to function well, do not get used up, they run continuously through the engine from the reservoir and back again. Therefore, if you do find that any of your fluid levels are significantly low, there is a leak somewhere. Leaks are a hazard to the engine, and to your safety, and should be fixed as soon as possible. If you are unable to find and repair the leak yourself, take the car to a mechanic or technician to be checked before your scheduled tune-up.

Power Steering Fluid

Checking the power steering fluid is important because if the level gets too low, damage to all of the steering components could ensue, and repairing the steering system is a costly endeavor. The following steps will teach you easily how to go about the process.

1.    In most vehicles today, that are equipped with power steering, the fluid container is usually labeled. If not, then you should look for the power steering pump and belt. On top of the pump, you will find, either a round metal or clear plastic reservoir.
2.    If your power steering fluid container is metal, then there will be a dipstick attached to the cap. Marked on the dipstick with be two level lines, one for hot and one for cold. You will fill the reservoir to the proper level depending on whether you are checking while the engine is hot, or cold.
3.    If your reservoir is clear plastic, then you only need to look at it to determine if the fluid level is below the fill line.
4.    Make sure that you are adding the type of power steering fluid that is recommended for your make and model of vehicle.

If your fluid level was extremely low, and you hear a loud, high-pitched squeal when you turn the steering wheel, you need to check the power steering belt. Damage caused from lack of fluid could have worn out the belt, or caused the belt to slip. If the damage has gone too far, or been left neglected for too long, you may need to have the entire power steering pump replaced. To find out if this indeed the problem that is causing the noise, you should have a qualified and reliable person take a look. Waiting until your tune-up is only going to make the problem worse. It is possible to perform these types of basic repairs on your own, but not a good idea if you are new to the inner workings of your vehicle.

How do you change a power steering pump in a 1998 mercury sable?

i have a new power steering pump for my 98 sable, i herd that i will need a "pulley remover tool" but those are expensive, how do you put on a new pump and do you have to have that tool, and does NAPA auto parts have a tool lending program

The pulley is made of "POS" plastic. They break easily! Random aftermarket pulley removal tools are weak and sloppy as they thread inside the power-steering pump shaft. *It would pay you great dividends if you took the old pump with the pulley attached and the new pump to your local Ford Dealership or a private mechanic and let them swap the pulleys. Be careful of the little white, fine teflon high pressure coupling ring.

I learned the hard way on this very vehicle.

2011 Mustang unbridles more power while reining in fuel consumption
Ford's ubiquitous muscle car has 7% more horsepower, 5% more torque and 4.5% more miles per gallon. The Ford Mustang is ubiquitous. More than 9 million have been manufactured over the last 47 years, driven by generations of owners, including my mechanic's son, my neighbor's daughter, even my very own mother.
