Failure Analysis, Cadmium Brush Plate Qualification and Salt Fog Testing of the AH-64 Shock Strut Mount, P/N 7-311113409 Sale Price: $26.95 |
|
This is a ARMY RESEARCH LAB ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND MD report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A237904. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: A failure analysis was performed on a shock strut mount from an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter. It was concluded that the failure was attributed to stress corrosion cracking and/or corrosion fatigue and had initiated at a region where the protective cadmium plating was worn away in service. Based upon this conclusion, it was necessary to qualify two facilities (Hunter Army Air Field, Savannah, GA and Ft. Lewis, Dupont, WA) for the cadmium brush plating rework of these components found to have worn coatings during routine inspections. The U. S. Army Research Laboratory was involved in the qualification process for both facilities, and the results of each quality audit are included. Finally, the results of salt fog testing of cadmium brush plated specimens, plated at the respective facilities, are also included, as well as a comparison of the grain size of the material in the failed component vs. the material from the struts plated at each facility. a |

Original publisher: Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD : Army Research Laboratory, [2002] OCLC Number: (OCoLC)694845963 Subject: Apache (Attack helicopter) -- Parts -- Testing. Excerpt: ... Figure 1. Schematic of the strut mount attached to the helicopter and the location of failure. 2.6 Visual Inspection / Light Optical Microscopy Figure 2 shows the fracture surface of the sectioned component in the as-received condition. The part failed at the machined radius of the spindle section. Figure 3 is a close-up of the fracture surface using oblique lighting, showing the fracture features, such as shear lips and beach marks. Two distinct cracks were noted and labeled " primary " and " secondary, " based upon the severity of corrosion on the fracture surface ( the crack with the most severe corrosion was labeled primary, while the other was labeled secondary ). These two crack fronts initially propagated on different planes and converged during fast fracture in the location shown in Figure 3. The size of the grains within these intergranular regions was so large that the resultant " rock candy " morphology was observed using light optical microscopy. Figures 4 and 5 show the intergranular morphology of the primary and secondary cracks, respectively. The green-colored primer was nonexistent along the length of the spindle, and the only evidence of the primer coating on the entire section was along the small portion of the shoulder shown in Figure 6. Visual evidence of the cadmium coating, as noted by white corrosion products, was only observed along the threads, as shown in Figure 7, and was not present anywhere else on the failed section. These coatings most likely wore off in service. The spindle itself showed areas of heavy corrosion and pitting. Figure 8 shows the radius adjacent to the primary origin. Note the corrosion pit that was only 0.031 in away from the fracture origin. Corrosion pits were also adjacent to the secondary origin, as shown in Figure 9. Corrosion pi... |

Here are some more information for Plates Strut Mounts:

Unless you have an avid interest in automobiles and know everything there is to know about vehicles, the average driver is not aware of common car issues. Just a hint of something being "off" with your car can be alarming. Here are five car problems you should be aware of, just in case of an emergency.
Engine Knock - Most of the noise coming from the engine is probably road debris that is lodged in between the trends of one of your car's tires or too great clearance between the components located in the valve train. If there is a persistent engine knock though, take your car to a qualified mechanic.
Squeaky Brakes - There can be many reasons why the brakes from your car squeaks-vibrations between the pads and the rotors, pads and the calipers, or calipers and the mounts. The squeal from the brakes could even be made with your shoes and the drums or shoes and backing plates. Again though if it persists, take it to the shop.
Check Engine Light - The check engine light is a service reminder built into your vehicle that illuminates whenever your car's computer thinks there is a problem with the emission control system. Usually, it is nothing major, but if the light color is red, your car may need immediate attention.
Vehicle Pulls to One Side - This problem simply means that your car's alignment is off, which can be easily fixed by taking the vehicle in for realignment. Just be aware when your car starts to veer off to one specific side.
Rough Ride - If your once smooth car suddenly turns rough, it may be your shock absorbers and struts. If this problem is fixed early on, it won't become a major issue, but if not, it might require an entirely new shocks or struts to get your car ride back to being smooth again.

Saab Xwd Offers “cross Wheel Drive” System
The Saab XWD “Cross Wheel Drive” system was developed in Sweden with Haldex of Stockholm and designed to provide optimum vehicle handling and stability in any type of driving conditions. The same system is also equipped in the 2008 Saab Turbo X and Aero version of the 9-3 Sport Sedan and SportCombi with high quality Saab strut mount and offered in combination with an enhanced 280hp (206kW), 2.8 V6 turbo engine made 15 percent more powerful with maximum torque of 400Nm/295 lbs/ft.
The Saab XWD “Cross Wheel Drive” system is offered in a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions. It also includes two unique features the pre-emptive engagement of the rear wheels that optimizes the traction at take-off and an active rear limited-slip differential (eLSD) that allows variable torque transfer between the rear wheels.
In addition, the XWD system is a fully-automatic, on-demand system that is capable of sending up to 100 percent of the engine torque to the front or the rear wheels whenever it is required. Aside from offering owners of Saab Turbo X and 9-3 Aero XWD with efficient handling in conditions where gripping power is required, it’s highly sophisticated operation also helps in enhancing driving experience in various road conditions. The perfect balancing of the drive torque between the front and the rear wheels increases the limit that triggers the ESP throttle and braking interventions which in turn more options for driver involvement.
The system is controlled by an electronic control unit which functions in harmony with the engine, transmission, and ABS/ESP control modules. The hardware is consists of a Power Take-off Unit (PTU) in the front final-drive that transmits engine torque through a prop-shaft to the Rear Drive Module (RDM) that incorporates a Torque Transfer Device (TTD) and an electronically controlled Limited Slip Differential (eLSD)—both are wet multi-plate clutch units from Haldex.
When starting from rest, the TTD is activated when clutch plates are forced together under hydraulic pressure engaging the RDM---this is also considered as the pre-emptive function and its vital for the improvement in current technology which calls for the detection of wheel slip before the TTD is set off. The pre-emptive function also provides maximum traction for smooth and strong acceleration even when vehicle starts from rest.
Once on the road, drive torque remains flawless and varied between the axles controlled by the valve in the TTD. This increases or reduces the pressure on the wet clutch plates. The Saab XWD is simply remarkable when it comes to cornering since it provides a balanced and a more efficient chassis dynamics. Furthermore, the data from the vehicle’s ABS/ESP sensors that measures wheel speed, steering angle and yaw rate together with highly sophisticated programming of the XWD enables the application of the rear drive that balance oversteer and understeer thereby improving stability and road grip.

What is an upper bearing plate? Is it the same thing as the strut mount? I?
My vehicle failed inspection for bad front upper bearing plates on both sides. So i'm looking online like advance and autozone and can not find this part, just wondering if it would be under a different name?
Upper strut bearings. Go to: rockauto.com, autopartswarehouse.com, partstrain.com or autopartsgiant.com to see what they look like. In short, they allow the strut to pivot as you steer on a small plate sized cage which retains ball bearings. There is one on the top of each strut tower under the inner fender.
Carson attractive to aerospace manufacturers
