As the name already mentions, off road car contests are organized races where the specially modified automobiles have to compete in natural environments. Usually the drivers have to compete on unpaved roads in harsh or even extreme conditions. The road is usually covered by sand, rocks, snow and even mud. In fact any natural terrain can be the scenery for such competitions. The more difficult the conditions are, the more the skills of the drivers and of the manufacturers are tested.
The vehicles that participate in off-road contests are modified to be able to face the difficult road conditions. Not only car participate in such competitions, but also buggies, trucks and motorcycles. These contests are organized on all the continents. However, only some of the countries have a long tradition in off-road races. Each competition comes with its own format, meaning that some of them test more the skills of the drivers than for example the technical abilities of the cars.
One of the well known off-road contests is the Dakar Rally, also known as the Paris-Dakar Rally. Even though it is called a rally, it is and endurance race. For many years, since 1978, the competitors had to travel a long distance from Paris, France to Dakar, Senegal. It was only after the 2008 contest that the Dakar Rally was moved to South America. This was due to security threats in the African region that finally led to the cancelation of the 2008 rally. This off-road contest is open to both professionals and amateurs, but only the best ones, helped by the best cars can finish the race.
North American off-road contests take place mainly in desert areas. This was the case of the first such event that was organized in the beginning of the 20'th century. It is known as the Mexican 1000 or the Baja 1000. The contestants have to drive across the Mexican desert in very harsh conditions. Another very famous off-road car contest in North America, the Vegas to Reno race, is part of the popular Best in the Desert series. It is a very long race and it covers 1000 miles of desert road.
Off-road car contest passionate people are also familiar with the New Zeeland's Taupo 1000 race. It is a test of endurance for the drivers since it is a stand-alone competition. It lasts two days and only the best and the most resistant competitors can win it.

What can i do to my 03 Honda CRV?
I have an 03 CRV it is 4wheel drive and i have BF Goodrich tko tires on it but thats about it. I want to make it better. I would like to modify the engine and performance without breakinng the bank and does anyone know what you can even do as far as off-road capabilities?
You could by a K&N type intake system (not just a filter a whole intake kit I believe they call it a Fuel injection performance kit or FIPK for short) and a free flowing cat back exhaust system, but the cost per added horsepower is not likely to be worth it as I doubt combined effects would even be noticeable on your vehicle. You would most likely see more performance on a 03 model with a Major tune up including Cap and rotor (if your model has one) spark plugs, Spark Plug wires, Air filter, Fuel filter and Pcv valve. As far as off road modification you can look around but I have not seen any lift kits for them.
