The day had came slower than the seasons before, it was finally time for John Richards and his son to go on their father-son getaway to the NASCAR race. As they loaded the truck that morning, the rain came down in half-dollar drops. Alex, at only six, kissed his mother goodbye, swiftly followed by John. She issued warnings and best wishes to them both before retreating into the house, the closest escape from the rain. John and Alex climbed into the truck, both fully ready to embark on their adventure.

After several hundred miles, John turned to his son questioningly. "You hungry, little man?"

"Uh-huh, can we go to McDonald's?"

"Why don't we go get some real food? You eat McDonald's all the time. Do you want to share something with Daddy?"

"No, I wanna go to McDonald's. We can share there."

"Why don't we just try something new just this time, okay, baby?"

"Okay," replied Alex in a winded tone, obviously pouting.

John stopped at a local restaurant, something they couldn't have back home. The sign read seat yourself, so they did so in one of about ten booths. It had a small-town feel to it, which John found very comforting having grown up in a small town himself.

"What can I get y'all to drink?" asked a waitress with long brunette hair and a stained white work shirt. John and Alex both got sweet tea. Before the waitress stepped away to retrieve the drink order, John interrupted,

"We already know what we'll be having, ma'am, if you'd like to go ahead and take our order."

"Well alright, what'll it be fellas?"

"Two T-bones, medium rare and some steak fries."

"Coming right up!" the waitress spoke with a sweet smile.

Father and son ate with little conversation. John explained to Alex that they were going to go see a bunch of cars try to race each other. Alex seemed mildly enthused, but much less so about the blood coming from his steak. He poked at his French fries until they finally left. John left the sweet southern waitress a substantial tip, simply for the nostalgia she induced, and they were on their way to the road once again.

Fighting the traffic, John finally found a parking spot amongst the RV's and camper tops forming a small city in every surrounding field. He picks Alex up and carries him on his hip to their seats, swimming through the crowd and throwing elbows all the same. After a couple hours of sitting and enjoying the hustle and bustle, not to mention several trips to the restroom for Alex, the race began.

The roar of the engines incited a long-lost adrenaline in John. The smell of the exhaust was hypnotizing. He put his arm around Alex and pulled him into his side in excitement. "You like this, buddy? Look how fast they're going!" Alex didn't reply, but rather hummed. John focused intently on the race.

After a bit, John lifts Alex up onto his hip again to head to the concessions. They wander towards a souvenir booth where they buy various novelties. Alex immediately puts on his commemorative t-shirt. They then head to the food concessions where John buys Alex a plain hot dog, about which he seems much happier than the steak. He buys for himself a Philly cheese steak and two beers. They sit on a nearby bench and enjoy their food. After the two beers, in the excessive heat, John merely holds Alex's hand and leads him back to a pair of empty seats.

Nearly immediately afterward, two men sitting across from the father and son begin an argument. One lewd comment after another is thrown back and forth until John stands and yells at the men to watch their language, pointing to Alex. This only exacerbated the situation, as their anger and language grew excessively worse.

One of the obviously inebriated men lunged at the other, attempting to punch his face into a pulp. They struggled and yelled and fought as the crowd parted to make way for the cops.

Meanwhile, on the track something was going severely wrong. Rowdy Jack Jr was swerving wildly until finally he hit the barrier, flipping his car sideways which almost instantaneously caught fire.

The crowd was in an uproar as the first response medics ran to the car. Meanwhile the cops were struggling to disconnect the two fighting drunks, the flames seeming to make their anger more intense. Finally, the police removed the men from the stadium.

Rowdy Jack Jr had been pulled from his car, seemingly unconscious and strapped to a stretcher. Within minutes a medical helicopter arrived and rushed him to the hospital. The crowd had fallen silent. Had 160,000 people just witnessed a historical death? No one knew, and no one could.

John quickly pulled Alex back onto his hip, out of the stadium, and into the truck. "I'm so sorry, son. This was supposed to be a fun trip. I never wanted you to see any of that." Alex merely nodded. Within twenty minutes they arrived at the hotel they had booked months in advance for this race. They grabbed the luggage out of the car and checked in.

Once in the room, John turned on the television to the news, which was covered in stories about the accident. No updates on Junior's condition. After about half an hour, John fell asleep on the bed next to Alex, television still on, still reeking of sweat and beer. He dreamed that night of the trip going perfectly, while his son lay awake next to him. He wouldn't know until years later the lessons Alex learned from what he then thought was a trip gone wrong.
