Advice on growing your own mushrooms?

I have bought one of those "grow your own Shii-Take mushrooms kits" from a garden centre.
I am at the stage where they have instructed me to put them in a bucket of water for 48 hours then put them in 2-3 cm of water in the polystyrene box and leave at the window for around 5 weeks.
They state that the germinating period will happen within that time however, it has not stated if the box lid should be opened or closed.
I have kept it open and the instructions say that there should be lots of white stuff (which there is) where the mushys will grow from.
I am wondering if any one has bought these kits and if they have kept the lid open at this stage or had to have them in complete darkness for any amount of time??
I am following the instructions to the letter but have never done this before and don't know if it looks right. Any advice on this is appreciated.
