Apple MacBook Pro MB471LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop (2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive, Slot Loading SuperDrive) Apple MacBook Pro MB471LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop (2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive, Slot Loading SuperDrive)
List Price: $2,449.00
Sale Price: $3,000.00

Redesigned with a precision unibody enclosure crafted from a single block of aluminum, the MacBook Pro is thinner and lighter than its predecessor as well as stronger and more durable. But Apple didn't stop innovating with the body's design. The MacBook Pro also includes a new 15-inch, LED-backlit glass display (instead of an LCD panel) and a glass trackpad that doesn't include a button (for larger tracking area) and features includes Apple's Multi-Touch technology. The redesigned MacBook Pro (see larger version). Under the hood, the MacBook Pro is powered by a powerful 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor (with 6 MB L2 cache and 1066 MHz front-side bus), which runs applications faster and more efficiently as well as helps to reduce power requirements and save on battery life. And the MacBook Pro includes two video processors for ultimate flexibility: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics for great everyday performance and NVIDIA 9600M GT discrete graphics for fast, smooth video--perfect for 3D gaming. It's pre-loaded with Apple's Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard operating system, which enables easy backup of your most important data via Time Machine, a redesigned desktop that helps eliminate clutter. It also comes with the iLife '08 suite of applications--including iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, and iTunes--and the newest version of the fast-loading Safari web browser. Other hardware features include a 320 GB hard drive, 4 GB of installed RAM (maximum capacity), an 8x combo Superdrive (for burning dual-layer DVDs as well as CDs), built-in Gigabit Ethernet for high-speed networking, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), FireWire 800 port, Mini DisplayPort video output (for DVI and VGA connections), and an ExpressCard/34 expansion card slot for expansion solutions such as 3G wireless networking. The New MacBook Pro Design Traditionally notebooks are made from multiple parts. With the new MacBook all of those parts with just one part--the breakthrough unibody enclosure. Every MacBook Pro starts its life as a single block of aluminum, which is precisely machined into the basic unibody design. Another pass and the unibody takes shape. Another, and the integrated keyboard emerges. When you pick up a new MacBook Pro, you immediately notice the entire enclosure is thinner and lighter. And it feels strong and durable--perfect for life inside (and outside) your briefcase or backpack. The standard aluminum electro-static trackpad has been replaced with a new glass Multi-Touch trackpad, which provides 40 percent more tracking area than before. Use two fingers to scroll up and down a page. Pinch to zoom in and out. Rotate an image with your fingertips. Swipe with three fingers to flip through your photo libraries. Swipe with four fingers to show your desktop, view all open windows, or switch applications. The entire trackpad surface is also a button, allowing you to both track and click virtually anywhere on the trackpad. And you can easily enable multiple virtual buttons in software, such as right-clicking. The keyboard has also been improved, with the rigid aluminum keyboard webbing cut precisely to hold the keys, which are curved to perfectly fit fingers. And it's illuminated, so when you're in low-light settings, such as airplanes or conference rooms, you can always see what you're typing. The 15-inch display is made of edge-to-edge, uninterrupted glass for a smooth, seamless surface and features LED backlighting for brilliant instant-on performance that uses up to 30 percent less energy than its predecessor. The ultra-thin displays provide crisp images and vivid colors which are ideal for viewing photos and movies Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Experience improved energy efficiency, expanded wireless connectivity, and amazing battery life with the 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which has a super-fast 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and an extra-large 6 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) The new hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--conserves even more energy, giving you more time away from the wall outlet. With 6 MB of shared L2 cache, data and instructions can be kept close to the two processor cores, greatly increasing performance and allowing the entire system to work more efficiently. And, because the processor cores share the L2 cache, either can use the entire amount if the other happens to be idle. Video Processing & Output The new MacBook Pro combines the efficiency of an integrated graphics processor with the desktop-class performance of a discrete graphics processor thanks to the inclusion of both. Out of the box, it runs the integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400M processor, which provides plenty of performance for everyday use with up to 5 hours of battery life. But when you need turbocharged performance for the most graphically intensive tasks, the discrete NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT processor delivers--such as for demanding 3D games like Quake, Call of Duty, and Spore. And thanks to a new graphics architecture, it's easy to switch between these two processors. The 9400M graphics processor shares 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM with main memory, while the 9600M provides 512 MB of dedicated GDDR3 video memory. The MacBook Pro includes a next generation Mini DisplayPort, which delivers a pure digital signal that can drive up to a 30-inch widescreen display. The Mini DisplayPort is ultra-compact at just 10 percent the size of a full DVI connector, and is compatible with Apple's 24-inch Cinema Display. Adapters are also available for using VGA, DVI/HDMI and Dual-Link DVI displays Hard Drive and Memory The 320 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0. The 4 GB of PC3-8500 DDR2 RAM (two SO-DIMMs of 1024 MB) has an industry-leading 1066 MHz speed, and it maximizes capacity for this notebook. Wireless Connectivity The built-in 802.11n wireless networking provides up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g, but it's also backward-compatible with 802.11a/b/g routers, enabling you to communicate with the a wide variety of Wi-Fi resources. It works seamlessly with the new AirPort Extreme with 802.11n. Use the built-in Bluetooth wireless technology to connect to your PDA or cell phone, synchronize addresses, or download pictures from your cell phone. You can also use a wireless headset for iChat audio chats and VoIP calls as well as quickly share files with a colleague. Video Conferencing with Built-in iSight Artfully placed in the glass display is an iSight camera, which enables easy video conferencing as well as allows you to snap pictures of yourself and create video podcasts. Using the iChat AV application, video conferencing is integrated into your iChat buddy list, so initiating a video conference is a breeze. iChat also lets you hold audio chats with up to 10 people and provides high-quality audio compression and full-duplex sound so conversation can flow naturally. For video podcasting, you can record a short clip using the iSight camera, then use iWeb to create a video blog entry or post your GarageBand-recorded podcast. Other Features Two USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire 800, ExpressCard/34 slot Mini DisplayPort compatible with DVI, VGA, and dual-link DVI connectors (all optional) 8x slot-loading SuperDrive with the following write speeds: 8x DVD±R; 4x DVD±R DL (double layer); 4x DVD±RW; 24x CD-R; 10x CD-RW Built-in full-size backlit keyboard with 78 (U.S.) or 79 (ISO) keys, including 12 function keys and 4 arrow keys (inverted "T" arrangement) Internal omnidirectional microphone and built-in speakers Combined optical digital output/headphone out (minijack) Combined optical digital input/audio line in (minijack) 50-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery providing up to 5 hours of battery life using 9400M graphics (up to 4 hours using 9600M graphics) Kensington lock slot Measures 14.35 x 9.82 x 0.95 inches (WxDxH) and weighs 5.5 pounds (including battery) Environtmental Considerations The entire new MacBook family meets stringent Energy Star 4.0, EPEAT Gold and RoHS environmental standards, and leads the industry in the elimination of toxic chemicals by containing no brominated flame retardants, using only PVC-free internal cables and components, and using energy efficient LED-backlit displays that are mercury-free and made with arsenic-free glass. Late Model Chassis

If you have looked at the price of new cars in the past few years, the thought of having to replace your old car with a new one probably terrifies you. Even the price of a late model used car in tip top condition might be beyond your budget. A reasonable solution to this problem is to look for late model salvage cars through an online auction sites.

If you know a lot about cars, or if you know a reasonably priced car restoration expert, you could save a lot of money by purchasing your next car from among the thousands of late model salvage listings that you can find online.

Advantages of Buying a Late Model Salvage Car
You may be able to find an ideal car for your purposes, even though it has been declared a total loss by an insurance company. Insurers have to make decisions on claims based on their judgment of whether a car can be easily repaired or whether it would cost more for them to fix it than the car's book value.

If a car has a book value of five thousand dollars and the insurance company could repair it for five thousand two hundred dollars, they will declare it a total loss and send it to an auction house for sale to the highest bidder. A knowledgeable buyer could get the wrecked car for a few cents on the dollar at auction and then use his expertise to repair the car for much less than the insurance company would have to pay for the same work.

Before You Bid on a Late Model Salvage
Check with your state motor vehicle department to see what their rules are regarding salvage titles. Regulations vary by state, with some states prohibiting clean titles for cars that have been wrecked and restored, and others allowing a new title to be issued. If you work with an auction company to look for a salvage car, they will have experience dealing with title issues and can help you work through them.

Physically inspect any car you may be interested in, or have someone inspect it. The auction listing is not going to be as detailed as your personal observations will be. Be sure the damage to the car is repairable without incurring unreasonable costs. A bent frame or other serious structural damage might keep you from bidding, whereas cosmetic damage to the body that resulted in the insurance company calling it a total loss might actually be inexpensive to repair.

Estimate as accurately as you can what all of your costs in the project will be. Include transportation fees, auction fees, title work, parts and labor in your projections. Then place a bid so you will get a great deal on the car if you are the winner. If you will spend as much from start to finish on the project as you would spend to buy the same car in good condition on a used car lot, then you are bidding too high.

A Growing Family of Pontiac G8 Models

Pontiac has been trying to position itself as a performance vehicle company for years. They came close with the GTO. The Solstice came even closer. Finally, they stepped up to the plate earlier this year and delivered the G8 series. They gave us the Base V6 engine (3.6 liters) in the stock sedan and delivered a performance monster in their 6.0-liter V8 engine GT. Early reviews were almost unanimously positive. People got excited (us included) and rushed to order. Some folks are just now having their G8's delivered.

But, Pontiac has some big plans to expand their G8 line during the next couple of years. I'm sure they realize how big a hit their G8 sedan and GT already are with car enthusiasts. In fact, with the GT's sticker price at $29,995, it's currently the lowest-priced highest-horsepower car on the market! No wonder it's popular. We're hoping they can continue the momentum. Here's a quick preview of 2 models that are sure to light up the showroom floors.

The Upcoming 2009 G8 GXP

Most of the buzz surrounding Pontiac these days is about the new 2009 Pontiac GXP that debuted at the New York Auto Show earlier this year. The main points of interest are the size of the engine (6.2-liter V8) and the manual transmission. The engine can push 402 horsepower with 428 ft. lbs. of torque. The power of these horses can take the GXP from a standing stop to 60 miles per hour in 4.7 seconds. Plus, the suspension and chassis have been uniquely formulated to provide a smooth ride during what Pontiac has called "spirited driving." The GXP should build Pontiac's reputation as a player in the performance vehicle market.

On The Horizon: The G8 Sports Truck

At the New York Auto Show, Pontiac also revealed their latest creation: the Pontiac G8 Sport Truck. There aren't many vehicles on the market that can polarize a community. But, the G8 Sport Truck may become one of them. Some car aficionados can't wait until late 2009 when Pontiac unleashes their Sport Truck to the market. It's reminiscent of the old-fashioned (but still a revered classic) El Camino. But, other car lovers aren't impressed. They claim the new Sport Truck doesn't offer much more under the hood than the GT and upcoming GXP. In other words, the G8 Sport Truck is all style and little substance.

Let's talk about the details. The Sport Truck will come standard with a 6.0-liter V8 engine that can climb to 361 horsepower. Also standard will be a 6-speed automatic. Pontiac claims the engine will take the Sport Truck from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 5.4 seconds. Like the G8 sedan, the Truck will sport a long wheelbase. The feature that obviously stands out is the cargo bed. After all, this is the 21st century. When was the last time a manufacturer delivered a new vehicle with a cargo bed? It can hold 1,074 lbs. and according to Pontiac, can tow up to 3.5 tons.

It's impossible for us to predict how the market will react when Pontiac launches their G8 Sport Truck to the world. It's a strange move, given Pontiac's obvious desire to be known as a major force in the performance car market. The G8 Sport Truck doesn't take them in that direction.

What's Next?

As far as we know, Pontiac hasn't revealed any other upcoming models in their G8 line. We're obviously anxious to see what their plans are for future G8 models. The GXP will probably be a stunner. It's likely to be a success right out of the showroom gate. The G8 Sport Truck is still a mystery. We're betting that if the Sport Truck fails to ignite sales, Pontiac may need to escalate their plans to release newer models.

So, let's wait and see.

I'm trying to get information on the average "life span" of a late model, or modified dirt racing chassis. Any drivers, team owners, crew members know approximately how often a new chassis is purchased, or an old one repaired? No stupid answers like "After a crash" please.
Come on....does no one race, or know someone who races? I need more answers than I can get myself.

It depends upon the size of one's bank account or their sponsors' bank accounts.

Some professional racers like Scott Bloomquist build their own chassis. So you might say that they are constantly replacing them, as they are likely working new cars into the mix as older cars are damaged or sold off.

Other professionals, who don't build their own, probably go through a couple chassis a year. They'll run them hard, then sell them off to lesser funded teams while they still have some value.

A well funded weekly driver, who might also race with a regional touring series, probably has two cars, a primary and a backup. The backup is probably last year's chassis, which he'll sell off after this season to help buy next years chassis.....and so on.....

The low buck racer isn't looking at buying anything new unless he absolutely has to. He might update his old chassis with this year's components, but he's still keeping that old chassis until it's twisted so badly it can't be fixed on the frame machine. A local Grand National (limited late model) driver has had the same car since 2002. He's a good driver and careful not to damage his equipment, and even though he's running a 7 year old chassis he's still competative each time he hits the track.

I know this doesn't exactly answer your question but hopefully it'll help somewhat. I'd suggest making a few phone calls to local drivers, and sending some e-mails to some of the more well know national drivers and chassis manufacturers.

Big fight for small car pie
The small car market in the city is on a steep growth path, expanding 35 per cent in the first quarter of 2010 compared with 8 per cent in the same period last year.
