No one’s a bigger Vanilla Ice Fan than me. I’ve got every album that this musical, lyrical god has ever released, starting with Hooked in 1989 and ending with his 2006 Best of compilation. When To the Extreme hit the scene, I almost lost my mind from excitement. Everywhere I turned, there was The Ice. On the radio. On TV. On the silver screen. I’m not ashamed to admit it, but I’ve watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II every Saturday night since it was released on video. Much to the amazement of my friends and family, I even quit my job for a year to follow his North American tour. Those were some of the happiest days of my life. When the tour ended, I was stone broke and had to hitchhike my way back home to Pensacola. But I have no regrets.
After I returned from my Vanilla pilgrimage, I got a job at a local record shop. I tried applying for more lucrative positions, but Spinner’s Vinyl was the only place in town that would hire me with all those lines shaved into the side of my head. I didn’t mind, though. Camshaft upgrade options - Ford 289?
I currently have my 289 engine for my Mustang torn down while the car is having some bodywork done. It is pretty much all stock equipment, I believe. We're talking cast iron heads and intake. The engine was rebuilt before I bought the car, but it is leaking oil so I decided to tear it down. The heads and intake are remarkably clean, as is the rest of the engine. But while I have it apart I am wondering if there are any simple upgrades I can do. I am going to a swap meet in a few weeks, and I may pick up an aluminum intake, as well as keeping my eyes open for new heads (although I'm not real worried about them for now). But what, if any, camshaft upgrades are there that would work well with my engine. I don't want to have to replace a bunch of other parts just to swap the cam. I'm just looking for something to mildly upgrade my engine, perhaps with a longer duration, maybe add a few horses to it.
Consult with your FORD dealer. They have answers for you. They also have a catalog of add-on parts that will make your 289 F L Y ! ! ! Make sure the cylinder head is modified for use with unleaded fuels. This usually involves valve seats. Or just get newer aluminum heads. You can install a Cobra cam shaft, or even one from a Boss 302 ( I think.) Make sure that you convert the ignition over to totally electronic. This will help immensely. Your engine probably has the old point system in the distributor. When the 289 ruled things, emission controls dampened the engine power. Your stock distributor can be "re-curved" or better yet get a Mallory. Go to the Ford Racing web-site. It should open your eyes!!
