Header Catalytic Converter

Among the automobile's mechanical assemblies, the exhaust system is seldom noticed. Part of the exhaust system is the muffler which when utilized collectively they can add more horsepower to your vehicle.

An exhaust system is basically a tubing system used to direct burnt gases away from the engine running into the muffler and going out in the open air. Depending on the system design, it will include several of the following systems:

  • the muffler,
  • the catalytic converter,
  • the turbo charger, and
  • the exhaust/cylinder head manifold.

Manifolds are intended to gather exhaust gasses spent by combusting fuel and channel them into one tube. They are often made of cast iron to endure tremendous heat.

Everything from the header back is called Header Back, which starts from the outlet of the header to the final vent to open air. Header back systems are normally made as after sales performance scheme for non-turbocharged vehicles.

A catalytic converter is a mechanism used to decrease the amount of poisonous gas emitted from a combustion engine. Launched in the US in 1975, it is still widely used today but for countries without exhaust prohibitions the converter may not be included to somewhat lower the cost of the vehicle.

The main function of a muffler is to reduce exhaust noise. They are usually installed along the exhaust pipe as component of the exhaust system of a combustion engine. The muffler uses a resonating chamber which is constructed to effect destructive interference thereby muffling a loud sound.

The tail pipe is the end of the exhaust pipe where it vents to open air. When seen from standing point of view, it is the lone visible part of the exhaust system and it usually ends with angled or straight cut. The tip is made of larger pipe than the rest of the exhaust structure to achieve a final cutback in pressure. You may install a fancy tip - to enhance the looks of your vehicle and prevent rusting in that area.

In general, one of the easiest systems in a vehicle to repair is the exhaust system. Because it is located externally and under the hood it is easy to reach and you can do the repair yourself if you have the proper equipment otherwise just bring your car to the nearest repair shop so your exhaust system can be fixed.

Make Your Automobile More Powerful With Custom Exhausts

There are many types of custom exhausts available on the market and all of them are designed to achieve one objective: more power. People who are fond of making modifications to their cars or trucks in order to enhance their performance in terms of more speed, loud and intimidating sound and better torque often look for cool exhaust systems. These exhaust systems replace the older stock systems to gain the above mentioned benefits. In order to achieve these benefits, a custom designed system is required which helps in better emission of exhaust gases.

The stock factory exhaust systems are often restrictive in terms of functionality and throughput. This is because they do not use custom designed individual parts which contribute to overall better and enhanced operation and also look aesthetically pleasing. On the other hand, the newer exhaust systems which are specially designed by keeping in view the requirements of a particular car or truck model are more appealing due to their ability to provide significant performance gains. These systems are provided by the aftermarket car parts industry in addition to many other useful replacements and modifications for your car.

The types of custom exhausts differ from one another in areas of price, functionality and materials used in their making. The type of exhaust system to choose depends on your requirements and budget. If you are looking for a more sophisticated and state-of-the-art system which is capable of producing a deep and unique sound and also provides maximum power gains, then you would have to search for the top-class exhaust systems available out there. Another choice is to replace one or two parts such as headers or catalytic converters and achieve fairly good performance gains. Many people change their down pipes regularly to keep them from wearing out and becoming a hindrance in smooth operation of the exhaust system.

However, the best option is to look for custom designed exhaust system kits available out there. These kits provide all parts in one package and are normally very easy to install. When searching for suitable options to replace your stock exhaust system, the internet can be the best place to start off. There are websites that allow you to find parts that match your requirements in terms of car make, model and year. These sites are also helpful in determining which option is best suited to your budget: individual parts or complete systems.

Remember that not all parts or components of exhaust systems contribute to performance gains. However, some parts like headers are often modified to achieve some benefits in this area. Dealer installed headers and mufflers are not optimized to enhance performance. Using the right muffler or silencer will help you achieve the sound and torque you are looking for. Similarly, catalytic converters are an important part of these exhaust systems which have been introduced merely to achieve better functionality and improved operation. All these parts come very cheap and the kits or complete system are even more reasonably priced.

A better emission system can enhance your car’s performance in terms of power and torque and therefore you should choose your exhaust system after careful consideration. Newer custom exhausts systems are now available that can improve your car’s appearance as well as make it more powerful. Replacement of old car parts is inevitable especially if you have an old car or truck. The most important and beneficial modification in the long run is provided by these exhaust systems as they are extremely durable and last for many years to come. This is undoubtedly an excellent and one of the most cost-effective investments for the maintenance of your car.

Should I replace catalytic converter?

I have a Dodge Charger R/T with the 5.7L HEMI. I have replaced exhaust system with dual Borlas. I would like to switch out the headers with new high flow ones. Should I do anything like new high flow cats as well? If so where can i find reasonable priced ones?

Seriously? I wouldn't do anything to a "car" it depreciates and you will lose money. Invest it in real-estate or something that has a history of a strong return for your money. Follow the crowd just to have a "cool" car and you will follow them all the way to working for the rest of your life. Be smart. Invest smart. Retire early and leave the crowd to their rusted out cars.
