Car grinding noise when turning?
I know there is something wrong with my car, I'd just like to know how much damage (cost) i'm looking at to get it fixed.
For starters when the car is going slowly there is a scraping noise, sometimes it squeals softly as the wheel turns, and it's always at a certain point in the turn, I had it checked out and had my brake pads and discs replaces on recommendation by the mechanic but the noise still persists, it's been like that for months now and I really didn't worry about it..
but now when I turn to the left, the right hand wheel makes a grinding noise, but it doesn't do it all the time, and sometimes it's much louder or much softer than usual, it's weird.
and the main thing is, once the car gets to speeds over 40km/h the noises stop, it only appears to be making the noises when the car is going slowly..
any ideas? and if you know what it is, what is an estimate cost to getting it fixed?
it's a 2000 Ford Fairmont
wheel bearing would be the place to start, but it may also be a CV shaft. to check your wheel bearings for ware you can raise the car so that the tire is off the ground, then with one hand on the top of the tire and the other hand at the bottom, try to rock the wheel back and forth. if there is a lot of slop then you can assume its your bearings and/or spindle.
when suspension parts, and engine and motor mounts start to ware out it is possible for the CV to come into contact with parts that they shouldn't. look around your CV where the noise is coming from and see if you can spot any noticeable metal to metal contact. it may also be causing damage to the CV, which is usually noticeable more while turning than any other time. I'm not sure that's the problem, since a CV is usually more of a popping and clicking than a grind, but its worth taking a look at if your bearings are in good shape.
as far as the cost goes you'll have to check with your local parts stores and repair shops. i can't help you as the Ford Fairmont is not sold in the U.S., so i can't even look up part prices in my local parts stores or dealerships.
