Fuel Engine Management

Volvo Construction Equipment's new D11 engine has been granted Tier 4 emissions certification by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). Engines which fall within the 175-750 hp class are to be bound by the Tier 4i emissions regulations from the 1st of January 2011, and that requires radical decreases in both diesel particulate matter, which must be reduced by 90 percent, and nitrogen oxide, which must be reduced by 50 percent.

The new Volvo D11 engine, now certified by the EPA, is equipped with V-ACT, or Volvo Advanced Combustion Technology, which features variable fuel injectors operating at extremely high pressure, as well as supercooled EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation)systems. The turbocharger controls are VGT (Variable Geometry Turbo), and the exhaust after-treatment is integrated and utilises a thermal regenerator and a sensitive particulate filter.

John Bartz, the Director of Product Assurance and Regulation for Volvo Construction Equipment North America, said:

Volvo Construction Equipment is meeting the emission requirements of the new standards by continuing to engineer and develop engines of the highest quality and reliability and with the greatest performance and productivity accomplishments on the market today.

The bets results from the advanced engineering of the D11 is in conjunction with the other aspects of the Volvo powertrain, which leads to effective combustion efficiency, which in turn leads to greater power capacity, lower fuel consumption, lower emissions and increased cost effectiveness.

Volvo has plenty of experience developing engine solutions which meet various pieces of EPA legislation, as they have already implemented such technology in the their Volvo trucks line, in line with the EPA's on-highway regulations of 2007. The off-highway solution has been tested under the equivalent of millions of hours, and a variant may soon be ready for vehicles such as their backhoe loaders, allowing them to rival the classic JCB 3cx for sale.

The new engine is highly engineered, with electronic controls, and the V-ACT system, combining to deliver control, engine management and torque of the highest quality. The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system reduces the production of nitrogen oxide significantly, easily enough to meet the 50 percent reduction guidelines required by Tier 4 regulations. It does this by recirculation, which reduces the level of oxygen present in the combustion chamber. This, in turn, reduces the temperature during combustion, and this prevents significant formation of NOx. The system is made possible by the use ultra-low sulphur fuel. Another requirement of Tier 4 is huge reductions in particulate matter. The new Volvo after-exhaust treatment system achieves this by catching particulate matter in a specialised filter, wherein the particles are oxidised, or 'regenerated', which removes them.

The use of Ultra Low Sulphur diesel is also stipulated by the Tier 4 regulations, and it contains 15ppm of sulphur, a huge reduction from 500ppm.

Due to the sophisticate level of engineering inherent in the new D11 Tier 4 compliant engine, a high level Engine Management System (EMS) was necessary, and this is exactly what has happened. The EGR is controlled by the electronic system, which coordinates the complex re-circulations.

Diesel Vs Petrol Engines

There are always choices to be made and one of them has something to do with cars. If you love to speed up, you would go for turbo but should you purchase petrol or diesel? That is something you have to weigh carefully based on your preferences. To help you compare, read some notes below and check against your requirements.

How a turbo diesel engine works

Diesel cars practically thrive on compressed air created by the pistons at a ratio much higher than that of petrol engines. As diesel fuel is injected for combustion, fuel ignites as it comes in contact with the compressed air. Ignition is possible since this compressed air has a high temperature that reaches 700-900°C or about 1300 - 1650°F. The increased temperature expands the cylinders, which pushes for pressure build-up that moves the piston.

Petrol or Diesel engines: What are the main differences?

The compressed air in diesel cars is so hot that when the fuel is injected, it readily burns so there is no need for spark plugs in diesel cars. Because of this, diesels can be accurately called ?compression ignition engines? while petrol cars have ?spark ignition engines.? There are no breakers or coils in the diesel like in petrol. Diesels do not have throttle plates. Power depends on the controlled, injected fuel. Electronic engine management is not necessary in diesels but some modern models already have electronically controlled pumps.

Advantages of the diesel engine over its petrol counterpart; In terms of performance, the latest versions of performance turbo diesel engines are controlled electronically. This way the torque produced is at par or simply better than that of petrol-driven vehicles. Diesels are not immune to cold and damp weather conditions. In theory, turbo diesels are more efficient than petrol cars. Cars running on diesel are much more environment-friendly. Diesels can reach more mileage than their petrol counterparts; diesel is cheaper than petrol in the market. Turbo charging a diesel car is much easier. Diesels are great for short trips because their ignition is not affected by temperature. Engines? efficiency is high whether from a cold start or not. Diesel engines are built to last longer. The cold starts are the petrol car?s primary killer. Lubrication is damaged easily in petrol cars.

The disadvantages of diesel over petrol engines; Compression ratio of 22:1 is good for engine brakes but this makes it harder to start the engine. Owner should invest in a good battery and starter motor. Diesels would need glow plugs or electric heaters so that engine will start easily. One plug is needed per cylinder and each plug eats up 15 amps ? which consumes battery. Diesel cars only gain about 70bhp with 1.9 liters of fuel versus the 100bhp in petrol cars. Diesel engines are heavy. Steering is heavy so you?ll need power steering option. Some modern turbo diesels run quietly but most are really noisy.

do i need a fuel management system for my b16 engine?

i have a honda ek sedan with a b16 engine. mods are: type are head, integre type r cams, type r pistons, and i/h/e. question is, do i need a fuel management system? or can i just leave it alone?
yes i know CTR cams are better but the ITR cams came with the car. I already have adjustable cam gears but i forgot to mention them..
correction by the way, TYPE R HEAD

Well, your internals are Honda manufactured parts and from the sounds of it you just have a few bolt on's. So, I would say no...it is not necessary to add a fuel management system yet.

But if your mind is set on getting some fuel management mods a good suggestion would be to buy yourself a fuel rail, fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter, fuel pump and an Apexi V-AFC2. Those mods would be more and enough to take care of fuel delivery on your engine.

I currently run the same fuel setup on my 00 Si Coupe, all the fuel components are AEM except for the pump which is Walbro, and I mounted a B&M fuel pressure gauge on top of the filter.

Another thing I have done to my Si that I would suggest doing to your engine as well...invest in a pair of adustable cam gears to get those cams working how they should. Honda's are setup pretty conservative from the factory, so while your tuning the fuel on the dyno, you can adjust your ITR cams as well and make some more power. I saw very noticable power gains throughout the entire powerband after have my Comp Cams adjusted

And how come you didnt get the Civic Type R cams instead? You know they are better right? They have a little more aggressive profile grind on the intake side than the ITR intake cam.
