A friend of mine once told me that her favourite Christmas was one when she had the flu, so they stayed home and did absolutely nothing. But what about the turkey dinner, I asked? What about the family get-together? Don't you miss the gifts? Nope, she said. None of that turned her crank. And then I realized that I didn't always relish all that chaos, either.
Why is it that Christmas elicits such feelings? We look forward to the holiday with great anticipation, but we also dread all the work, and the visiting, and the noise. My mother-in-law, who once was the proud owner of over a thousand Christmas decorations, is now the fed up owner of over a thousand Christmas decorations. Christmas, I think, has simply become too big.
Sometimes I dream of a small holiday, with just the four of us sipping hot chocolate around the tree. Then I realize how much we would miss all the ornery relatives-and the nice ones-if they were absent. But add four extra kids and four times as many adults to the picture, let alone negotiating which side of the family we spend which day with, and Christmas becomes a huge production.
This aspect of the season has a whiff of an austere aunt telling us to write our thank you notes: you just have to do it, and your feelings don't matter. So we entertain, buy multitudes of presents and rush to parties, even if we're tired and cranky. And this rushing deprives of us of something we want desperately at Christmas that we don't necessarily have at other times of year: quality time with our own families.
And Christmas is the only time of year that truly is about family. There are no swimming lessons or hockey games or play practices or exams. There's only family. So this year is going to be different, we vow. We're going to build memories, forge bonds, and show the affection that is sometimes lacking as we pass each other at the refrigerator. We have images of families huddled around the fire as we read the Christmas story, sing carols, and throw snowballs if only the weather would cooperate. When our kids would rather watch the latest DVD or play with their new presents, we get really annoyed. We demand too much of Christmas because we don't have it at other times of year. That's a lot of pressure to put on December 25.
Can Christmas live up to all the hype? Perhaps, but only if we come at it not with unrealistic expectations, but instead with a quiet and firm commitment to put first things first once more. Christmas can't make up for a whole year of busyness, but it can ground us once again so that we can ensure the chaos doesn't last all year. During the holidays, when we breathe that sigh of relief because there is no hockey, or gymnastics, or skating, or jobs, it begs the question why we make ourselves so busy in the first place. Maybe, if we gave ourselves more time during the year, Christmas could once again be a time to relax and laugh together. It's an extension of what you do, rather than the exception to the rule.
Christmas is about family, faith and love. But let those things not be gifts that we unwrap at Christmas, only to tuck away again until next year. Let's build them into our lives, today, and reap the benefits of the holidays all through the year.

Check Out The Efficient 2010 Pontiac Solstice Engine
Pontiac's Solstice roadster and coupe ended production on July 29, 2009. Leftover models have no powertrain changes for 2010.
The Solstice offers a choice of two ECOTEC four-cylinder engines: a normally aspirated 2.4-liter version for base models, and a 2.0-liter turbocharged version for GXP models. Both engines are all-aluminum, with 16 valves, chain-driven dual overhead camshafts, twin balance shafts, and variable valve timing.
The base Solstice's 2.4-liter LE5 engine has 173 horsepower and 167 lb-ft of torque. On paper, it compares well with other big fours, offering more horsepower than Toyota or Mitsubishi's 2.4-liter engines. Subjectively, critics complain that it is gruff, noisy, and slow to rev -- out of character for the sporty Solstice. Its fuel economy is also unimpressive; EPA ratings are 19/26 with manual transmission, 19/24 with automatic.
The Solstice GXP's 2.0-liter LNF engine shares the LE5's basic architecture, but it has a narrower bore and a shorter stroke, with thicker cylinder walls, deeper water jackets, and forged steel connecting rods and crankshaft for better durability. It is GM's first North American engine with Spark Ignition Direct Injection, which injects fuel directly into the combustion chambers for greater power, lower emissions, and better fuel economy. With up to 18 pounds of boost from its intercooled turbocharger, the LNF engine is rated at 260 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, giving it an excellent specific output of 130 horsepower per liter. Remarkably, many testers find it smoother and more eager to rev than the 2.4-liter engine. It returns better fuel economy, too; EPA estimates are 19/29 with manual transmission, 19/27 with automatic. GM recommends premium fuel for both engines.
Although Solstice production has ended, GM Performance Parts still offers a variety of heavy-duty equipment for its ECOTEC engines, including race-ready engine blocks, cylinder heads, intake manifolds, and camshafts.

In racing or street engines, do steel cranks increase power at all?
I know that forged steel crankshafts are stronger. But if one were to replace the cast iron crank with a forged steel crank, would the horsepower and/or torque output of the engine increase at all?
What is a "Knife-edged" steel crank?
If the steel crank is lightweight, does that increase the ability to accelerate faster as well as horsepower and torque?
Knihe edgeing is when the couterweights or other portions of the rotating parts of the crank are ground to a sharp edge and polished so that when/if they cut through the pool of oil in the bottom of the oil pan (during the course of rotation) the oil causes less drag on the crankshaft. I doubt this would add more than a fraction of 1% of hp unless you have a oddly designed oil pan or crank location. And in some engines the oil pan is designed so that the bottom of the crank actually never dips into the pool of oil.
Sport Compact Car magazine had an article written by an automotive engineer who stated that if you decrease rotating mass it is like decreasing the entire weight of the vehicle by 12 times whatever actual weight of rotating mass is removed. So, any lighter crankshaft would increase hp and torque or at least acceleration. Also, a steel crank will be stronger than a cast iron crank and lighter and a forged steel crank would be lighter and stronger beyond that. I think that people go to the forged crank for the increased strength more than the weight decrease. The crank manufacturer would probably have dyno results to prove out increases in hp to give you an exact idea of the impact for your application.
