The cylinder head is the most important part in an engine where substantial time and effort is spent by a professional tuner. There is more power to be gained in correctly porting the head than in any other modification that it can be done to an engine.
Cylinder head porting is the process of grinding material from the ports and chamber of the cylinder head to increase the airflow and thus improve performance of an engine.
The flow efficiency of the head will determine the horsepower potential that an engine can achieve and by correctly porting the cylinder head, higher level of efficiency is achieved and the engine will extract more power.
The cylinder head consists of three important areas which are the intake section, the combustion chamber section and the exhaust section. It is very important that all three sections are modified to work in conjunction with one another as power will suffer and engine efficiency will decrease considerably. I cannot stress this enough as every day I come across ruined heads after being ported badly and my point is that it is useless to have a huge high flowing polished inlet port and the combustion chamber is all shrouded and will not burn it efficiently or the exhaust port does not flow enough air or has a bad shape or the inlet/exhaust flow ratio is out as the engine will not produce more power or even worse decrease its power after being ported.
Another important topic is engine characteristics. Cylinder head porting needs to be accustomed to the usage that the engine will operate at. A head modified for drag racing operating between 7,000 and 10,000rpm will be useless to a rally engine needing more midrange torque and operating between 3500 and 7500rpm.
When a new client comes to our workshop for a porting job we ask several questions so that we can tailor the porting appropriately the type of driving the engine will operate in.
If the engine is going to be built in house then we know most of the answers but if a client come with just the cylinder head than we need to make sure to have all the required information so the cylinder head porting will be done accordingly.
Just to give you some idea these are some of the questions that we ask:
a) Is the engine for street use, off-road/rally, circle track or drag racing?
b) Is the engine normally aspirated, turbocharged, supercharged, NOS, or a combination?
c) Engine size, Bore, stroke, connecting rod length?
d) What type of fuel is going to be used? Pump fuel, racing leaded fuel, alcohol?
e) Is the engine carbureted or electronically fuel injected?
f) Will the car have a full exhaust system or open headers?
g) Is the camshaft still stock, and if not we need full specification.
h) What is the weight of the car and type of transmission and gearing is used? Manual, auto, sequential?
i) ....etc
After all the questions are answered then we can start the cylinder head analysis and port the cylinder head accordingly.

2010 Camaro Performance Chips
The performance chip or tuner is a way to reprogram the internal computer inside a vehicle. Most vehicles have the capability to use one of these chips or tuners and the 2010 Camaros are no exception to this. One may ask the question, is there a large selection to choose from or is it one of those things that one choice is all that is available? The answer to that question is yes there are many different options, and with all of the different options come different benefits catering to every individuals needs. Today we will just cover three of many choices but most of them will be very similar in their performance and increase in efficiency.
The first that we will cover is the Diablo Sport Predator. The Diablo Sport name was founded in 2000 and has continued to be a leader in the Performance chips and tuners industry since. Diablo Sport has claimed performance increase of 20+ horse power and 20+ ft/lbs of torque on the new 2010 Camaro L99 with the automatic transmission and they even do a little better on the LS3 motor with the manual transmission. They’ll boost the LS3 by about 25 on both. With gains of 1-3 mpg fuel efficiency as long as you aren’t racing around town. Installing the Diablo Sport will only take about 10 minutes with an on screen display that practically walks you right through the install. They do not void any warranties that may be available from Chevrolet, and they come with a 2 year manufacturer warranty of their own. If you want or need to restore the original programming it is just as easy as installing the reprogrammed one. You just go through the exact same steps and choose the stock setting. There’s also another fancy little feature of the diablosport predator on the 2010 Camaros with the L99 automatic. When you put the car in cruise control, it shuts down four of the cylinders to get better gas mileage. The only problem with that is the car doesn’t sound the same anymore. With the diablo, you can disable that feature, making it run on all 8 cylinders all the time.
The second tuner on the agenda is the Hypertech Max Energy for the 2010 Camaro. The Max Energy Power Programmer extracts every bit of energy possible. With this nifty little tuner you have the power to boost horse power and torque, improve gas mileage, raise top speed limiter, raise the “RPM” rev limiter, recalibrate speedometer, read, and display and clear DTCs. They are internet updateable with the USB included and they are legal in all 50 states. In most cases 12 horse power and 20 ft/lbs of torque are common giving the Camaro better in traffic response time. Just like the Diablo Sport you can expect 1-3 mpg fuel efficiency. Also this product does not void the factory warranty with a 1 year warranty of its own. They include two performance tunes for either 91 octane or 93 octane fuel. Although hypertech puts out a nice product, most people go the way of the diablo instead because the features are close to identical, but the power gains of the diablo are bigger.
The third and final for today is the Jet Performance 2010 Camaro Performance Chip. Jet Performance has been doing what they do for over 40 years. They are committed to give the consumer what he or she really wants... more power. The Jet Performance programming is designed to burn fuel at peak efficiency, which results in improved performance and mileage. Jet Performance boasts about their gains for the Camaro of 15+ Horse power. Fuel and timing curves are modified for optimal performance and mileage using less expensive, lower octane fuels. Just like the other two you do have the possibility of up to an extra 3 miles per gallon, it will require a little discipline on the driver’s part, keep the foot off the floor. Installing it is easy, in less than 10 minutes of installing the chip and there you’re off to play. They also offer their one year warranty against defects. They have two different versions of the chip available. There’s a stage one chip, that is designed for stock 2010 camaros. They have a stage two also, that is designed for modded 2010 camaros, that have other mild boltons like a cold air intake, headers, exhaust, or others. The nice thing about the tuners is they work on stock or modified engines, but if you know what you need, the jet chips are also a great way to go.
Tuning is the easiest of the aftermarket upgrades for the 2010 Camaros, and the nice thing is they work together with any other parts you add to give even bigger gains. So if you have a tuner that gives 20 hp and an air intake that gives 20 hp, you’ll gain more than 40 by using both items, because they work together. This makes the performance market even funner once you get further in.

1994 Chevy Camaro...?
I have a 1994 Chevrolet Camaro. It is a 3.4L V6 and the speedometer says it only goes 115mph... I want a fast car that can keep up with my fiance's 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse (3.0L V6, but his goes up to 145mph). What can I do to the Camaro to make it go faster or get more horsepower? I am putting a dual exhaust system on it, it has no catalytic converter (the dealer took it off before I bought it, which is why they are no longer in business), and I know new headers would help, too. But what else is there? I've checked e-bay for stuff, but I just can't seem to find much stuff... Any advice on what to do and where to get it from?
I didn't want the Z28 because I didn't want to deal with the outrageous gas mileage with gas prices the way they are. I only get 19mpg with the V6 so I can't imagine what a V8 would get! I don't like turbo or superchargers; they're cheating. I want to make my car fast by upgrading, not adding extra stuff...
Ok your camaro probably has the factory ecu. which will limit it at probably 115. you just get a programmer to let it keep going past 115.
But you can do the headers and the performance chip and intake if you wanna be cheap bout it.
If you really wanna beat em get a supercharger. Or get some performance internals.
