Folding Foot Rests and Seats
Stair lift seats and footrests generally fold up. It is often asked how much room the lift's chair takes up when folded. The answer is typically 14 inches from the wall when folded. However, keep in mind that unless the stair chair is in motion, it will always be parked at the top or bottom with call-send controls active. All in all, space is usually not a big concern unless the stairway is unusually narrow.
Seat Belts
All stairlifts have seat belts. Not everyone uses them, similar to automobiles. It is recommended, however, that you never use a stair chair without the seat belt fastened securely. The chairs are designed to prevent falls; falling out of a chair with the seat belt unfastened has the effect of defeating the lift's purpose.
Hinged Rails
Hinged rails are not standard equipment, but are available on all stair lifts. The purpose of a hinged rail is to remove the track that extends beyond the end of the last step at the bottom of the stairs. The track may extend out into a walkway or obstruct the full opening of a door. In either case, a folding hinged rail solves the problem.
Raised Mounting Brackets
Raised mounting brackets are not standard equipment on all stair chairs. Raised mounting brackets are mounted under the track at the top of the stairs to prevent the track from obstructing a door at the top of the stairs. In order for the lift chair to reach the top landing, the track must extend beyond the edge of the landing as much as a foot. The track can be raised using raised mounting brackets to allow the door to close.
Swivel Seats
It is essential that a person intending to use the lift be able to sit in the chair with the chair facing into the room or hallway, and away from the stairs. This entry procedure minimizes any possibility of a fall while attempting to sit down in the chair. The same applies to the exit procedure at the bottom. You should always plan to swivel the chair into the room or hallway, stand up, and walk straight away from the stairlift chair. Swivel seats not only swivel but also lock into position, which is also essential to safety precaution.
Call Send Stations
Most stairlifts have two sets of call-send controls, one for the top of the stairs, and one for the bottom. There are several different types of call-send units, depending upon which stair lift you purchase. Some can be mounted to the wall, and others are designed to set just beneath the upper and lower track so they can be activated by stepping on them. One press will call the chair to you or send it to the top as you require. Keep in mind that some stair lifts are designed to carry items, and you may need to send the items up by themselves, or call them down as a convenience.
Emergency Stop Switches
All stairlifts, regardless of model or make, must be equipped with emergency stop switches that automatically stop the lift if it meets with any kind of obstruction. Consider, for example, what would happen if a person with no feeling in their lower body were to drop their inside foot off the edge of the lift while it was in motion up the stairs. Without an emergency sensor switch, the user could suffer a serious injury. Emergency stop switches are mounted on the seats and footrests of all stair lifts to avoid such injuries. Make doubly sure that all safety pressure stop switches are operating properly if you change the battery yourself on a DC-powered model.
Constant-Pressure Arm Rest Controls
The controls that a stair chair occupant uses to move the lift are mounted on the armrest. In some cases they are pressure switches under the end lip of the rest, and in others they are toggles that are pressed forward or back. In every case, you must keep constant pressure on the switch for the stair chair to continue moving. This safety feature insures that the occupant is always in full control of the motion of the stair lift.

Our safety is just a matter of good sense
When I was a kid, I wanted a motorbike in the worst possible way. I vividly recall the bitter arguments with my parents, when they refused to consider even the possibility. Years later, the scenario was replayed, between my son and me - and I became the "bad guy."
It's not that I have anything against motorcycles - not really. Most of us realize that a two-wheel vehicle is less stable and potentially more dangerous than a four-wheel vehicle. And one visit to a hospital emergency room after a motorbike accident victim has been admitted is sufficient to confirm a parent's worst fears, when a son or daughter makes an ardent plea for this form of transportation.
But any type of machinery or mechanized equipment can be dangerous, if the right precautions are not taken. It always amazes me that airplane passengers don't hesitate to fasten their seat belts when requested to do so, but many of those same people struggle with rush-hour traffic on the freeway without applying the same precaution.
Even though states have introduced laws enforcing the use of automobile seat belts, it's unbelievable how many people find excuses not to use them. Yet statistics show clearly that seat belts save lives. Many law enforcement officers have been quoted as saying they have never unbuckled a dead person.
And what about men's reading glasses, especially the protective kind? Regular eyeglasses can shatter if struck by a piece of flying metal, and specially constructed safety glasses always should be worn when working around any type of material that can damage the eyes.
No one wants to be blinded because he or she was too stubborn to wear safety full frame glasses either at work or while pursuing a favorite hobby. It can take but a split second for an unexpected or "freak" accident to change a person's life forever.
But let's get back to the motorbike for a minute. No, I can't make you wear a safety helmet, but I can tell you that most motorbike accident victims suffering from devastating or fatal head injuries were not wearing a helmet.
And safety belts in your car? Maybe it's sufficient to say that, after many years of tending accident victims in the emergency room, I think there are very few tragedies that can top the sight of a badly injured child who's been hurled into the dashboard or through the windshield of a car because he or she was not wearing a safety belt.
Of course, nothing is 100 percent absolutely safe. But every safety device used brings you a whole lot closer to being protected than if you make no effort at all.

Long belt conveyors need some safety eqipment to operate safely fore the operators and conveor itself. I need to know about those safety equipment and the american standards applied to that .
all rollers and the tail / head pulley must be guarded if it is within 7' of the ground or a work platform..
it must also have a pull cord running down the side for emergency stops..
