Motocross and dirt bike racing is as popular as ever, all over the world. Let's take a look at the many different types of motocross racing that are popular these days:
Freestyle
Freestyle motocross is sometimes also known as FMX. The main difference between freestyle and regular motocross is that riders try to gain points from judges based upon tricks that they perform. Tricks may include the 360, backflip, underflip, frontflip, carolla, scorpion, tsunami and sidewinder, among dozens of other tricks. There's also different types of landings and take-offs. One handed, no handed, side saddle, you name it. Famous freestyle motocross riders include Carey Hart and Mike Metzger.
Supermoto
This type of motocross racing began in the 1970's as a fun side project for motocross racers. Supermoto is a type of race where motocross bikes that are meant to ride on dirt are modified so that they can compete on pavement, as well as dirt. The track for a Supermoto race consists of both dirt and pavement. The bikes must have special tires with specific types of grooves that can handle both pavement and dirt tracks during the same race.
Enduro
Enduro is a type of off-road race with different challenges and obstacles included. There's often several stages and the bikers race against the clock in a timed trial as well.
Trials Motocross
This is a more straightforward type of time trial race. Motocross bikers race on a dirt track and they are timed. So instead of tricks or jumps, the focus of the race is purely to get the best time or to beat the best time.
Hill Climb
A hill climb motocross event is exactly as it sounds. Riders must go up a hill and try to get the fastest time. In some cases, the race may be to see who gets the farthest up the hill in a certain amount of time. Hill climb motocross is also called hillclimbing.
Supercross
Generally, supercross is a term used to describe an event, usually taking place in a large stadium, fairgrounds or arena that has installed an artificial and temporary dirt track. The track would consist of jumps as well as obstacles. The type of motorcycle used is a very high performance, specially outfitted bike made specifically to handle the high jumps and sharp turns that are typical of the event. Recently, there have been events that used temporary tracks that were modified to take place in smaller arenas such as basketball and hockey arenas.
ATV Quad Motocross
This type of motocross is not for motorcycles but for ATV's or Quads, also called All Terrain Vehicles. The bike has four wheels and special frames and tires that are built for dirt racing.
Sidecarcross
This sport with a funny name is also called sidecar motocross. A sidecar is attached to the bike where a passenger will stand. The passengers job during the race is to provide a counterweight. The sport has declined in popularity in recent years, however.

Ft. Myers Volvo S60 is a speed demon
Looking for a party? I hear the Indy 500 is a great time. In fact, I'm thinking about heading out this year to the home-state of the late, great Michael Jackson (RIP) and tearing it up with some friends. From what I hear, the party is a blast, but the race is something else. Friends have described the adrenaline rush that comes with seeing speed demons taking corners like they are riding on autopilot, just sticking to the track with the ease and grace of a roller coaster. And yes, there is certainly a lot to be said about the Indy car experience, but I'm a fan of Nascar and regular car racing if you ask me. It's easier to picture yourself behind the wheel – which is exactly what Ft. Myers Volvo S60 pundits were thinking when they heard that the brand decided to juice up the vehicle for its own racing debut.
For this year's Belgian Touring Car Championship on April 11, the Volvo S60 hit the track running. Backed by the Chinese-owned Swedish automaker's Belgian S60 racing team (talk about cultural diversity), the S60 is set to hit the track for the rest of the racing season. It's a fantastic public relations stunt by Volvo, but it is one that has paid off for manufacturers in the past. New and used Ft. Myers S80 dealers wish that they had a contending vehicle to make its own appearance; alas, the S60 is one of the only track-worthy vehicles in the Volvo lineup, although there are plenty of great vehicles offered by the manufacturer. Ft. Myers Volvo S60 drivers find it pretty fun to see their car whipping around the corners at the race track.
However, we have to be honest here. The S60 Europeans will get to see on the track isn't exactly the mirror image of the car hitting new and used Ft. Myers S80 showroom floors in the near future. The highly regulated Belgian Touring Car Championship offers little deviation between racers. For both the Touring model and the regular S60, you'll see the same tube chassis, aerodynamic work and front and rear suspension. If you're a potential Ft. Myers Volvo S60 driver, you won't be able to take advantage of the standardized V6 that kills with 410 horsepower – partnering in crime with a six-speed manual gearbox for rear wheel drive – that is featured in the racing car. Regardless, you will get some seriously sporty style, great power and fantastic performance.
Thus far and throughout the summer, the S60 competes in two 90-minute heats per race and a twelve hour Enduro as a little extra challenge for the car. Ft. Myers used S80 dealers are gritting their teeth in anticipation of what the S60 can accomplish this year. Regardless of how it finishes, this is a great branding opportunity for Volvo and a great chance to really see the power of Volvo vehicles. We'll expect to see more manufacturers with powerful cars jumping on the bandwagon over the next few years.
