Selecting a suitable Digital Video Recorder (DVR) is as important as the cameras, if not, more so. As with the CCTV Cameras, you need to make sure you cover the area, get enough detail and consider Day Night Viewing. With CCTV DVRs, you need to consider how you intend to record (on motion detection, alarm contacts or schedule record); what quality and resolution you require; how many days of recording you would like (consider your holiday periods); would you like access via internet & mobile phone viewing and finally what is your budget? One of the most important factors people forget is "will the supplier provide Technical support and hand-hold with configuration of the DVR?" and more importantly "network configuration".
DVRs record onto Hard Disk Drives (HDD) and these are normally pre-installed by the supplier. Selecting the size of HDD you require will largely depend on your requirements. The contents of this article will help you list "what are your requirements" and also arm you with a list of questions for your potential supplier!
Recording Options
How you wish to record will heavily depend on the area you are monitoring. The three most common record options available on most CCTV DVRs are; recording based on motion detection, Alarm Contacts or Scheduled record.
Motion detection - based recording is where the DVR detects motion by comparing current picture with previous picture and if there is a change it will start to record. If DVR supports motion detection, then it will have some form of option to adjust sensitivity. Some of the more advance DVRs will also offer privacy mask (mask out areas - trees, public areas etc), pre-record (store few seconds of footage before the motion detection) and post record (store a few seconds of footage after motion stops).
Alarm Contacts - Start record when an external alarm is triggered. Some examples of external alarms are door contacts, external PIRs, perimeter sensors, etc.
Schedule record - Recording at specific time of day or all day.
What quality and resolution you require?
Quality and resolution are two separate parameters and should not be referred to as one and the same. Quality defines how the picture is to be compressed; a high record quality will give you good a playback but will consume more space on the HDD. On the other hand the resolution defines the size of picture being recorded. There are 4 different resolutions that a available (a good DVR will at least support 2CIF), these are:
QCIF (176 x 144) - This represents a 1/16 of the screen size. Record size is so small; the recording is not worth having and this dates back to the early CCTV years before technology developed.
CIF (352 x 288) - This represents a 1/4 of the screen size. Absolute minimum size you should record.
2CIF (720 x 288) - This represents a full screen, with half the vertical lines. Since it is very difficult to detect this, this tends to be the preferred record resolution.
4CIF/Q1 (720x576) - Full size image, highest resolution most recorders will record at. All parameters contribute towards size of video data, hence the size HDD required.
How many days of recording you would like?
There is no specific definition for the number of days you need to hold recording for. Some police forces and some city councils do require you to have 30 days of recording for off-license premises. For residential (home CCTV) and commercial (shops, warehouses) you should consider your holiday periods.
Would you like access via internet & mobile phone viewing?
Being able to access CCTV video footage over the network is not available on all DVRs by default. Some of the advance CCTV DVRs allow you to live view, playback, adjust configuration and take backup over the network. This feature does require you to open ports (setup forwarding) on the router. You may need help with router configuration; confirm with the potential supplier that they are willing to help with this.
What is your budget?
The budget is very important however you should think ahead before your purchase. For example, some of the cheaper DVRs use IDE (PATA) HDDs which are no longer available. So if you have a problem, the unit is worthless!! The most commonly used HDDs in all new systems are server Grade HDDs (known as SATA).

Deciding on the type of CCTV DVR isn't easy, but if you have some understanding of the issues then at least you know the type of questions you should ask. I need help capturing a DVR from a cassette to my hard drive. Is there anyone that can help?
I have some footage that's recorded on a MiniDV cassette from a Sharp VL-Z3 recorder. I installed all the proper drivers for the camera onto my laptop. I've tried to use the Windows Movie Maker to playback the video so I can capture and edit some parts of it to save it to my hard drive.
I connected the camera to my laptop using the S-Cable from the A/V output of the camera to the laptop.
When I select the "Capture Video" function, is says that no video device is connected to the computer. I'm kind of confused by this and the user manual doesn't help much at all. Go figure!
Is there a step that I'm missing somewhere? Do I need to save a copy of the video to my laptop before I edit it?
***S-Video on Computers are Outputs Only, IE: to your television, to the camera etc.*****
-For this process you will need a Firewire Cable (sometimes referred to as an IE 1394). This will be avaliable at most Electronics Store. For a laptop you will generally need a 4-pin (Laptop End) to 4-pin (Camera End) connector. For a Desktop it is generally a 6-pin (Desktop End) to 4-pin (Camera End).
-Once you have your camera hooked up, open a Video Editing Program on your computer. Generally Windows will come with Movie Maker (located under accesroies), or on a Mac you have IMovie.
-In either of these programs, depending on your Operating System, open the capture tool. If you have properly connected your camera, and have it turned on, in Playback Mode (VCR Mode), you should see it now on the computer.
***NOTE: It is usually best to turn plug in the camera, turn it on and put it in Playback mode before starting the capture tool in the program.
-Once you see it on the screen, you should have a button that either says record, or looks like the record button. Press this, and the camera should start playing and recording to your comptuer. If the camera does not automatically start playing, press play on it.
-Once you are finished bringing in files, hit stop on your PC. You now have these files on there, most likely in an AVI format (The Highest Quality).
-You can then edit and manipulate it however you want, and export it as a movie. To put longer movies on the internet or DVD, you will probably have to downsize it to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2. This is another problem for another day.
