The Dodge Cummins diesel is known for its fuel economy and ability to be built up for power.... and known for its transmission for different reasons. The Dodge Diesel trucks are the favorite of anyone that is looking for fuel economy in a diesel and doesn't have a brand preference, because the dodge gets the best economy of them all. Even at that, things are tight with the cost of diesel and the hard times in the economy. There are some things that can be done to make it even more fuel efficient.
The first thing that anyone is going to do to make their Dodge Diesel more efficient for fuel economy and power is a chip, programmer or module of some sort. Chips, programmers, and modules all do essentially the same thing. They alter "timing" or when the fuel is injected; "duration" or how long the injector is held open to release fuel; or "pressure" which slightly increases fuel line pressure to put more pressure up against the injector get a better atomization of the fuel. Most chips programmers or modules use a combination of the methods to improve the engine efficiency. Most chips, programmers or modules give anywhere from 1 to 5 miles per gallon increases, dependant upon driving habits and the truck configuration itself. The gains for the 5.9L Cummins engines are pretty consistent. The new 6.7L dodge diesels are different however. They have a new emissions control system with diesel particulate filter that hampers performance and fuel economy. Most chips give these new trucks about 1 mpg better fuel economy.
Another way to increase efficiency and power are air intakes and larger diameter exhaust systems. Air intakes generally give about 1 mpg and exhausts can be anywhere from 1 to 4 mpg. If you do a chip, intake and exhaust all together, you actually get a little bit more out of each item. The nice thing is that all the add-ons give more power and pay for themselves pretty quick in the added fuel savings. The newer dodge diesels don't really need an exhaust upgrade since they come standard with a 4 inch diameter exhaust from the factory since the 2004.5 model dodge trucks, and the exhaust change that can be made on the 6.7L trucks is very minimal due to all the sensors in that exhaust system. It's nice to know that we have alternatives though.

Information on Air Intakes for Diesel Trucks
Getting the best performance out of your diesel engine is what every truck enthusiast strives for. In order to accomplish that, sometimes you need to go outside of the stock options and get yourself some upgrades. Other times it is the stock options that are causing the performance. This is the case with the injection pumps in some Dodge Cummins diesel engines. The Cummins diesel engine manufactured by Dodge between 1998 and 2002 came equipped with a Bosch VP44 injection pump. Unfortunately these injection pumps have been know to have their fair share of issues and may need to be replaced.
Bosch VP44 injection pumps perform four basic functions:
1 - Varying the timing relative to engine speed.
2 - Producing the high fuel pressure required for injection
3 - Distributing the high-pressure, metered fuel to each cylinder at the precise time
4 - Metering the exact amount of fuel for each injection cycle
The Bosch VP44 is an electronic rotary distributor pump that can vary fuelling and injection timing, and also contains fuelling, timing, and diagnostic data.
The number one cause of Bosch VP44 injection pump failure is a drop in fuel line pressure, which is usually due to a malfunctioning lift pump. Normal fuel pressure is around 15psi and if the pressure drops below 5psi an injection pump failure is probable. Remember bad lift pumps can run unnoticed until costly damage is done to the Bosch VP44 injection pump.
The following are the top two most common mechanical failures:
1 - Check Engine Code 216
This is the most common mechanical failure and occurs over a period of time when weak lift pumps, with low fuel pressure; rupture the diaphragm in the front of the injection pump. The timing piston will then vibrate to a point where it wears the housing of the pump down until the fuel is able to bypass the piston. Dodge has recognized this problem for some time, and they no longer even sell the lift pump that goes on the side of the block anymore, instead they replace it with a unit that is now mounted in the tank.
2 - Rotor Seizure
Another mechanical failure with the Bosch VP44 injection pump happens when the rotor seizes in the distributor section of the pump. The most common cause for the seizure is a lack of lubrication. Since the fuel lubricates the Bosch VP44 injection pumps, weak lifts pumps can again be blamed for this failure. The seizure will then break the Drive Plate and the truck will stop running, never to start again, until the Bosch VP44 injection pump is replaced.
Preventing Bosch VP44 injection pump Failure
The best way to avoid failures of the Bosch VP44 injection pump is to prevent them from happening. Purchasing a replacement lift pump, one that is of a better quality than what comes from the factory will help. If that option is too costly, you can also install a gauge to monitor your fuel pressure. With the gauge you will be able to know when your lift pump is going out and can easily fix the problem before you lose the Bosch VP44 injection pump.
Preventing problems before they occur is the best way to take care of your truck.

I am considering buying a diesel to tow our trailer. Can anyone tell me what they are getting for mileage out of 06-07 cummins (5.9 OR 6.7) Powerstroke (6.4 or 6.0) or Duramax 6.6. Would love to know what you get solo AND towing (and how much you tow) Are your numbers with or without a programmer like bullydog ... THANKS!
Few things. 2003 Duramax: 23 MPG (the 03 was one of the better years, less power but less problems).
Hauls a 33' 5th wheel over the Colorado passes with no problems. Average about 13-15 MPG hauling the trailer.
AVOID the 6.0 Ford, they had TONS of problems.
Cummins is a strong motor, great value. The auto tranny can't hold a candle to the Allison in the GM.
How big is the trailer you are pulling? Something to consider is that Diesel in most parts of the country is about 20-25% more in cost that gasoline.
If you buy a diesel you better do a lot of pulling and you better plan on keeping it for a while. If you don't then you are probably better to stick with what you have.
