Salt water aquarium filter systems can seem a bit overwhelming at first. There are so many choices and some of the equipment looks like it might go on the space shuttle instead of a marine aquarium.
Choosing Your Salt Water Aquarium Filter Setup
The first part of choosing your saltwater aquarium filter is to determine the fish you are going to keep and the size of the aquarium you are going to keep them in.
This is extremely important because some fish like larger predators produce much more waste then smaller fish like clown fins. A larger tank also needs larger filtration because of the extra water volume.
Types Of Salt Water Aquarium Filter Systems
Canister-This filter is a pressurized canister that takes in water, scrubs it of dirt and debris and returns it to the aquarium. Many canister filters also allow you to use some sort of biological filter media and other medias like activated carbon to keep your tank in great shape.
There are now canister filters that can support tanks over 200 gallons and have a high gallons per hour ratting (GPH). Many filters can go about a month between cleanings and still flow well.
However their intakes and outlets of this salt water aquarium filter setup will protrude into your tank and not look natural. Plus if they ever develop a leak the potential is there for a large flood.
Hang On Tank Filters- These are very basic filters and the function like miniature canister filters. They use much smaller pumps and have less filtration area. You should limit these to tanks no more then 40 gallons. However you can go slightly bigger if you use multiple units.
There main drawback is the filter pads get clogged fast reducing their water flow. They also are easy to see because they hang on the tank and can detract from the look of your system
Sump Filter- The most popular salt water aquarium filter setup with advanced hobbyists is the sump system. These are often referred to as wet dry filters. Although they can be set up a variety of ways.
These filters use an overflow box to take water from the aquarium and take it to the filter below. The water is then returned by a pump. These filters almost resemble another small aquarium.
They can be filled with anything from bio balls, live rock or various filter pads. They are nice because they give you extra water capacity and give you a place to put all your other equipment like heaters and other equipment that can take away from the appearance of a tank.

Permanent Solutions For Wet Basements
Wet basements are caused by a number of different problems and each one has its own solution. Sometimes a small floor crack or wall crack leaks during the rainy season, and other times there may be a bowed wall or cracked wall causing steady water seepage all year round. Basement repair is our main line of work and we have several methods to choose from depending upon your situation. Whatever your situation is we have a solution to match. We have been providing basement systems and basement repair for years and have hundreds of satisfied customers.
Wet walls cause more than moisture problems - they are also a common source of mold and mildew and can lead to serious health problems. Mold remediation is one of our specialties, and we can solve the problem by stopping the moisture at the source, preventing further spread of the spores to other parts of your home. Get rid of that damp, musty smell and stop the moisture from doing more permanent damage to your home by calling Ozark Waterproofing today. We can send an expert over to evaluate your situation and provide an instant quote, and you can get back in your basement again and start using it for whatever you want.
Water seeping through concrete actually weakens the concrete as well, because concrete contains steel rods or steel mesh that can corrode when wet. This corrosion of the rebar spreads to other parts of the wall that aren't even wet, causing a weakening and eventually crumbling of the walls, leading to much larger problems than just a water leak. Left alone a simple water leak can destroy a basement over a few years time.
Crawl spaces are just as likely to harbor mold and moisture as basements are. At Ozark Waterproofing, we offer a specialized process of encapsulating your crawl space to ensure that moisture is kept out. This helps prevent moist air from doing damage to the rest of your home and keeps mold and mildew from creeping in with the warm moist air from your wet crawl space.
We also install basement entrance systems and finishing products as well as dehumidification. We can install or repair helical piers and anchors and solve many other related foundation and structural concrete issues. You will see energy savings in the form of lower heating and air conditioning bills as well as an immediate increase in the value of your home from our services. my sump pump failed to come on, and now my basement has flooded, i have a wooden subfloor, my main concern is?
my main concern is future growth of mold, the subfloor is plywood on top of straping then carpet on top, underneath the subfloor is like a tar paper. Do you think this subfloor needs to be ripped out as their is really no way of properly drying it out fully and i can just see it becoming a factory for mold. One problem with the way it's been done is that all the walls have been constructed on top of the subfloor, so it looks like the walls have to come down in order to fully remove the subfloor, i have put a claim in on this to my insurance company. Any suggestions on what is the best way to avoid mold being that the insurance company is involved... any opinion is welcomed
You probably need to rip it out. If the walls are built on top you may be able to cut the center area out and rip the edges out from under the wall. If I wanted to try to keep everything in place the hillbilly in me is thinking re-flood the basement with bleach water then pump it out and get a dehumidifier or two and run them non stop for at least a week.
Sorry to hear about your flood. Hope all goes well.
