Life is hectic. Between your work and family, finding time to complete a home remodeling project - let alone a minute to just relax - is nearly impossible. That's why when it comes to home renovations, we usually overlook the smaller things that need to be fixed in lieu of replacing leaky faucets, replacing the inefficient dryer or taking down peeling wall paper. So before your spring months quickly disappear into summer vacations, take some time to address the smaller, but equally as important, remodeling aspects of your home. A great place to start is to replace your door hardware. If you aren't sure what or how to update your door hardware, read on!
First Impressions are Everything
Like your mother always told you, first impressions are lasting impressions. While this generally applies to people, it too can be applied to your door accessories. Slapping on a lesser quality door knob might make your home renovation project easier, but to onlookers, it just reflects poor planning and lack of imagination. Before you begin any home remodeling, be sure you have sufficient time to begin and complete the project.
Keep it Consistent
Every neighborhood has that one house that is full of eclectic odds and ends, haphazardly strewn together to create a smorgasbord of a home. Don't be that homeowner! Before you even being to browse for new door hardware, evaluate the themes and styles you have already established in each room of your home. If your outdoor décor is elegant and dark, a shiny chrome knocker and door handle will look out of place. Additionally, if you are ready to change the style of your home, then be sure that your newer style will match whatever hardware pieces you choose.
Stick to a Budget
Any professional contractor would give your home an estimate of total costs for any home renovation project. Why should doing a project yourself be any different? Door hardware can run the gamut in prices - so be sure to calculate just exactly how many knobs, levers, handles, hinges and screws you will need. You might be able to purchase screws in bulk if you are buying similar colored and finished door hardware pieces. Always add a cushion to your budget for any emergencies or accidents that could potentially occur.
Designs Reflect Function
No two door handles are alike. In fact, most homeowners generally prefer a type of door handle than others. Have you ever considered the variety of handles available? Typical knobs used in homes are privacy knobs with locks, levers and dummy knobs.
Privacy knobs are ideal for - you guessed it - keeping people in or out of an area. These models typically have a locking mechanism in the center of the knob that is pushed with a thumb. While these door handles are not necessary decorative hardware, they do help establish privacy. Best of all, these models also come with an emergency releasing mechanism in case you absolutely need to unlock a door (ie: in case children accidentally lock themselves somewhere).
Regular lever or door knobs are available without locking mechanisms. These models are ideal if you are looking to add decorative hardware to your overall design and style. Front and back doors to the outside are great places to install this type of "passage" door knob, especially since you can incorporate more intricate designs and weather-proof finishes giving off the perfect first impression.
Finally, dummy knobs are most commonly used for cabinetry units. These knobs - or levers - are simply for aesthetics only and are purely decoration. Installing these knobs in cabinets is a great way to actually open the cabinets without an annoying twisting knob. Also, these knobs are great for other decorative purposes such as coat racks and wall hangers.

Purchasing locks for commercial Buildings
A number of factors need to be taken into consideration when purchasing locks for commercial facilities: security requirements, ADA compliance, how often the lock will be used, and the type of room being secured. From the front door to the storage closets, each application requires careful consideration in lock selection.
Most commercial buildings, from warehouses to schools, rely on a mixture of lever locks, deadlocks and mortise locks. Each type of lock normally is available in standard, medium and heavy duty construction. Standard duty locks are suitable for privacy locks, patio locks, classrooms and storerooms. Medium duty locks are suitable for office doors, passageways and classrooms. Heavy duty locks are suitable for entry doors, apartments and offices. When choosing a lock, consider how secure the door needs to be--heavy duty locks provide more security than standard duty locks.
Study the lock construction to determine if it's going to do the job. For example, in choosing a heavy duty cylindrical lever lock, look for the following specifications: 1) Meets ANSI/BHMA A156.2, Series 4000, Grade 1 for key-in-lever locksets; 2) Allen-head screws are used on the inside levers to prevent vandalism; 3) Lever is free-wheeling when the outside lever is locked; 4) Meets requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1991; and 5) Cylinder assemblies are removable in case the lock ever needs to be rekeyed.
Decide if you can use a mortise lock or need to install a deadlock paired with a cylindrical lock. A mortise lock provides ease of entry since the lever will open the door after the top locking mechanism is unlocked. A deadlock/cylindrical lock combination requires unlocking both the deadlock and the lever lock but provides more security.
Consider having a special coating added to lock levers installed on doors leading to rooms containing hazardous materials. The rough sensation of the abrasive coating alerts anyone opening the door to the potential dangers on the other side.
Added security can be found in electrified door locks. The best locks offer either a "fail safe" or "fail secure' option. A fail safe latch bolt
can be operated by the lever from either side except when the outer lever is electrically locked, then neither lever opens the door. By contrast, on a fail secure lever the deadlock latch bolt can be operated by the inside lever at all times, only the outside lever is inoperable when the latch is electrically locked.
The best lock suppliers will offer locks for every need, including asylum locks, dormitory locks and closet locks. Expect to pay from $40 for a basic lock up to $300 for the most secure locks.
