For all you know, you could have developed a severe eating disorder to stay model thin and derailed your career; you might have loved your children dearly but resented how motherhood dashed the hopes and dreams you held before you became a parent.

You might not have been able to do all the amazing things you did in this life because you had that freedom. If you decided to follow your dream of being an artist instead of going to medical school, it might be easy to regret that choice anytime money gets tight but for all you know, you could have been sued for malpractice and lost your license and all of your money. Be proud of yourself for following your heart and doing what you wanted to do; if you did not want to be a doctor, do not spend time thinking you made the wrong choice because you did not. You have no way of knowing if your life would have been better and thinking about things that cannot be changed now is not a good use of your time. Focus on the here and now and what you can do to make the life at present the best it can be.

It is never too late to change. If you find yourself looking back at your past and thinking about all the things you wished you had done but did not for one reason or another, it is not too late to break this cycle. If you have the desire to do certain things and it is still feasible to do them--do them. For most of us, fear dominates our decisions and this is no way to live. We have all these things we want so badly but we never make any serious attempts to obtain them. We are afraid of making the wrong choice or we automatically go to all the bad things that might result and these thoughts paralyze us, leaving us right where we are.

This is a place of frustration, boredom and unhappiness. To be clear, the choices I am speaking of involve doing things you want but are afraid to. I am not talking about doing things you do not want to do but think you have to or should want to. If you do not want to have children, do not have them solely because you think you might regret it later. If you have the desire to move to a new location or try a new line of work, just do it. Sure, it can be scary but that is natural when dealing with the unknown.

If you do not like the new location or the new line of work, go back to where you came from or try something else. Most choices are reversible to some degree so there is no harm in pursuing these things. If they do not work out, you have many more options still available. Regret and fear go hand in hand. Once you dissolve fear, regrets will fade away as well because once fear is out of the picture, you can begin living an authentic life pursuing all the things you desire.
