Attic/whole house fan extinguishes pilot light on gas water heater? Cure? ?
Water heater in a space enclosed by louvered bi-fold doors and has two large diameter vent tubes through ceiling to attic. Cut off pantie hose nylons and stretched over openings to muffle air flow through the large vents. Thinking about covering the louvers on the bi-fold doors but worry about oxygen starvation to burners and possible gas/fumes buildup. Any suggestions?
Water heater is in what used to be garage. Yes, I do open windows. Attic has a non powered turbin and roof is a hip roof, i.e. vents around soffet edges rauther than on gable ends. Sealing off louvered doors would have same effect as installing solid doors.
The purpose of an whole house attic fan is to bring in cooler fresh air as you suck out the hot air from the house and blow it up into the attic.
So where is your supply of fresh air coming into the house from - it's coming in from unwanted sources such as your gas water heater vent line because you are not providing any other substantial path for fresh air.
You need to open some windows ( a little in several rooms) to allow this fresh air in. You are probably putting a big strain on the attic fan motor which is desperately seeking out intake air to feed the fan.
It's like pinching a drinking straw in half while you try to suck up a milk shake through it.
If you have a basement in your home, this is a good area to draw fresh air from because the basement acts like a a/c unit because the cooler temps in the basement will cool this incoming air. Now you realize you must open a couple basement windows to allow air to come into the basement. If you have no screens for the basement windows you can Make some simple ones to install on the outside of the windows.
You can either prop open the door to the basement, or cut in a floor register 24" x 24" .
Also try turning your attic fan on medium or low. It doesn't take high speed to move the air, low will bring in an amazingly steady flow of cool air.
Also remember you must have adequate attic vents either in the gable ends, roof vents,soffit vents, ridge vents. If not your attic fan will be struggling to push the air out of the attic, like trying to blow up a balloon that is already full of air.
Tape some pcs. of crepe paper above each doorway in your home, now open the windows just a little until you see the streamers of crepe paper fluttering at about the same rate. Now try your attic fan at different speeds - check your crepe paper streamers (about 12" long) to see if each room is getting the same air movement through the doorway.
This will work !!
