What's the best type of heater during cold days that keeps air clean?
I live in an apt that has a pretty old gas heater. I'm confused as in whether I should use that (which might be cheaper) or get an electric heater. Please provide advice on which would not dry out air as much and keep air clean and which would be more "bang for the buck".

Stay away from Electric heat unless you own the utilities that produces it. Electric heat is ex$pe$ive and you still will need a humidifier (to get moisture into the air).
Gas heat is the way to go. A gas boiler with some type of humidifier.
As to your heater, a good electronic air filter system would be the ticket, but they can be exspensive. I have a Very good one, but it costs about $1300.00 five years ago.
DON'T disturb the duct system of your furnace if you can help it. They're loaded with dust. Even if you have them cleaned, you'll still have dust floating around for years. They can't get all the dust out and untill it settles down, you'll have dust everywhere. As long as your putting in some type of filtration system, have a humidifier installed right away. It works when the furnace fan comes on. You'll just to remember to change the "Wick" evey year,especially if you don't have a soft water system in your house.
That awful smell may be mold
Q: We have a ranch with an attached garage/breezeway and a 2-year-old roof. Every few years during the winter or early spring when there is a big thaw, there is a terrible smell of wet, damp wood coming from the attic as well as the garage.
