How was my ipod touch able to track using google maps while driving around ?
I was with my mom and brother today driving to the mall and I decided to take my itouch with me. While driving there some crazy lady cut us off and made us drive onto oncoming traffic so we called the Police and followed her. I took my ipod out to get googlemaps just for roads names. Despite not having wifi of course i noticed the blue dot with the circle showing your position was moving everywhere we were going.
How is that ? I am positive i didnt have access to the internet however It followed us everywhere we went. So how is that possible that the google map app pre-installed knew where we were on my itouch 2g ?
There is a built in piece of technology which acts like a GPS. It is used to determine you location.
Heres how it works:
First, it scans wifi access points around you. The locations of these access points are downloaded onto your iPod when you viewed the map of your area. Using these access points, the iPod geometricly calculates your approximate location and it shows it on your Google Maps app.
Neat feature... eh?
