Corvette C1 - A True Dreamcar
The Corvette was released in New York in the year 1953 and was designed by Harley J.Earl. The first model was manufactured by GM and was a convertible with two seats. This exciting model was aimed at capturing the huge small car market from the likes of MG and Jaguar. A lot of models of the corvette line which were made by hand were released in the year 1953. Attractive interiors in polo white and red with a canvas top in black were some of the features unique to this range.
Engine used was the six-cylinder 235 cubic inch model, which was slightly modified to accommodate dual exhaust and a three-carburetor design. This variation made sure the engine was very powerful. The two speed gearbox was automatic.
A lot of trail and errors followed and Chevrolet emerged with its Corvette C1 in the year 1955. The V8 block engine first featured in this wonderful car. With dimensions of 265 cubic inches, this engine came with a horsepower of 195. The front fender's "V" was fine tuned in this model. This year saw Chevrolet establishing its model firmly in the American market with its superb performance.
Chevrolet C1 featured an outer body, which was stunning and attractive. The chrome teeth in the front looked flashy. Trunk area was curved and flanks were scalloped. A frame divided the seats. Bucket seats featured in one of the most awesome and luxurious interior. There was a cockpit like feeling inside the vehicle, which also came with the option of a removable hard top.
The year 1956 saw GM racing the Corvette C1, which now featured an engine of 210 horsepower. This engine also featured a three-speed transmission, which was manual.
Features of the Corvette C1 included a revolutionary material known as the fiberglass. This was a composite material used as a replacement for steel, which was in shortage due to the Korean War. Components of the vehicle were standard which includes the powerglide automatic transmission. Blue Flame was the six cylinder engine which was used in the standard line of Chevy cars.
In spite of all these features, the performance was not up to expectations as compared to the Italian and British sports cars of that period. The Corvette C1 in fact was almost shelved but for the fact that it received a revamp with Chevrolets introduction of the revolutionary V8 engine in the year 1955 which set it back on track.
Moreover, this period saw the Soviet émigré Zora Arkus-Duntov from the engineering department of Chevrolet adding spark to the Corvette C1 V8 engine by incorporating a three speed manual transmission to enhance performance and helping the vehicle regain its reputation. This is the reason Arkus is considered to be the father of the corvette.
Corvette C1 thus went through various trials and modifications from the years ranging from 1953 to 1962 to finally emerge as a successful and performing racing model of that period. Chevrolet continues to go strong with its racing model cars thrilling driving enthusiasts all over the world.

Would a 1949 Chevrolet be able to drive on the freeway?
The car I would get is in Daly City, across the bay from Hayward, where I live. Since I must go through the freeway to make it back here is that possible? Would the old bugger have enough kick in its 215 straight 6 blue flame (90 horsepower) to make it?
No problem at all as long as it is mechanically reliable. Actually the engine is a 216 (not 215) and it has a low pressure oil system which could be a little problematic if the engine is not in good mechanical condition. Before attempting the drive, find out about the condition of the engine. You can do this to some extent by pulling and examining spark plug electrodes, listening to the engine, examining the character of the exhaust, and looking for emissions from the blow-by tube. If the engine sounds mechanically quiet, the spark plug electrodes are gray, there is little blow-by pressure, and little or no blue smoke from the exhaust, you should be fine.
But also make certain the suspension, wheel bearings, and front spindles are sound, the brakes work good and the steering does not have excessive play.
