Although replaced by the MS 260 a few years ago, the Stihl 026 chainsaw has to be one of the most favoured chainsaws for its use around the garden. So why is this chainsaw so popular? The simple answer has to be quality, efficiency, reliability.

This an exceptionally good chainsaw for use around the home and the farm. Weighting in at around 4kg and with engine power equivalent to 2 kW (3 HP) the 026 is a light and very efficient chainsaw to use. Take for example you want to cut some small logs for your fire. With a 12" guide bar the 026 is more than capable of handling the job. On the other hand, lets say you have logs of a larger nature, you can fit a 16" guide bar to your chainsaw and you will find that the Stihl 026 is still adequate to complete the job.

Here is a couple of things to look out for when you are using your chainsaw.

1 Always make sure that any chainsaw you are using is kept sharp. You will know it's sharp if you see the chainsaw chippings being driven far back off the saw. Or you can check to see the size of the chippings, they should be long and thin, about 1/4 to 1 1/4 inches long depending on the size of the chainsaw you are using.

2 Make sure you use the proper fuel mixture a ratio of 50: 1 is the best mixture to keep your saw running at its highest level. Although you can use a stronger mix than this it is not necessary. Sometimes you can get contaminated fuel. To prevent you using this fuel, simply pour a very small amount onto a disused concrete area, leave for 24 hours. When you return and you find that there is residue on the concrete that means your fuel is contaminated probably with paraffin or some other substitute. Do not use this because it will clog up your carburetor with a gunge like paste and stop your saw from performing.

3 Make sure the chain on your guide bar is the right tension. You should be able to pull the chain up off the centre of the guide bar about 1 inch, any less than this the chain is to tight. This can lead to unnecessary ware on your guide bar. On the other hand if the chain is to slack, your at risk of the chain coming off the chainsaw causing you death or injury.

If you are looking for a comprehensive guide into buying a Stihl chainsaw or just need some reassurance when choosing one. Philip Murphy, a user of Stihl chainsaws for more than ten years offers some great tips and advice on old and new models in the Stihl range. You can visit his website by following this link.

How to Change a Car Air Filter

There are two things that the car owner should pay attention to in a car. These are fuel and air. For instance, if the car receives clean fuel but on the other hand receives dirty air, it may not function as it is supposed to. For this reason, cars are fitted with air filters. The purpose of the air filter is to keep the engine free of such elements as dust and insects. It is recommended that car owners clean or replace these filters at the very least once or twice a year. However, it would be prudent to change the filter after the vehicle has traveled some 12 000 miles. On the upside, car owners will discover that a car air filter does not cost much. Moreover, one can replace or clean it since the replacement or cleaning process is not complicated. While some car owners will opt to have their car filters changed by a professional mechanic, car owners can also successfully change the filter on their car.

It is important to change the air filter after some time for the simple reason that it negatively affects the overall performance in the car if not replaced regularly. When the air filter is clogged by dirt or insect residue it may affect the overall output of the car thus, the output of power in the car is less. This means that it becomes hard for the car owner to navigate for instance the freeway on a ramp. However, the biggest effect that a clogged air filter has on a car is on the gas mileage. There are a few easy steps to follow for users looking to the air filter. Firstly, it would be impossible to change the filter when the car is still running. Thus, the car should be parked on level ground and the ignition turned off. Next, the bonnet should be opened and propped up with a rod so as to locate the air filter. In most cars, the air filter is often located on the engine top.

As for older car models, mostly those that have carburetors, the filter is located under a circular plastic or metal cover. The air filter cover is removed by loosening the hose clamp sealing the air conduct and undoing the screws holding the air filter cover. After, this it is then possible to take out the air filter, which is usually circular or rectangular in shape and is often made of paper, cotton or even gauze. Once, the filter is out, the filter housing unit should be cleaned. However, this should be done after the air conduct has been sealed with adhesive tape so as to prevent dirt from getting into the engine during the cleaning process. A vacuum cleaner may be used to suck up any dirt particles logged therein. At this point the filter should be replaced with a new one by inserting it into the housing. It is also important to note that the rubber rim always has to remain facing up. Finally, replace the cover, by properly inserting it back into the air conduct.

What would cause a briggs&stratton motor that runs great for awhile to just shut down ?

This motor is on a log splitter and will run fine for awhile (about an hour) then shut down . If you let it sit for about 10 minutes it will restart and run but only for a few minutes. I took it to a repair shop and they replaced the ignition coil ,but I still have the same problem. We cleaned the fuel tank and it has a fuel filter on it .Could it be in the carburetor ?

It could be dirt in the carburetor. Does this engine have points or electronic ignition. When it quits you should check and see if it has spark. Do this right when it quits. If it has spark you can figure it is a fuel issue.
