how much better are discs than linear pull?
i bought a motobecane outcast 29er. it doesnt come with any disc tabs but a surley monkey fork will fix that. question 1. is it worth the 200+ dollars to put a new fork new wheel and avid bb7 mechanical disc up front? or are they not that good or are discs not that good? I also have a specialized rockhopper (26" wheels) and it has the tabs ready i just need new wheels and the discs. im not sure if i should invest money in that or buy carbon fiber stuff like handlebars or seat posts. if it is worth it, what are good discs and calipers are good?
I have to disagree a little with everyone so far.
First, if you were to have just one disc brake it SHOULD be in the front. Rear brakes are for modulation, front brakes are to stop so having a disc front/v back should pose no problem.
Second, neither the Moto nor the Spec deserve discs OR carbon fiber bits. If you get tired of the bikes and try to sell them with the upgrades it won't make them worth anything more... in fact, used CF handlebars and seatpost might actually reduce the bikes value. In my opinion neither bike will benefit from these upgrades (CF parts or discs).
Third, you are not going to buy a new fork, new wheel, and BB7 setup for $200 unless you buy a trashy fork and wheel which in itself would be a bad choice.
Save the money you have and concentrate on getting a nice AM (all mountain) bike. Heck, I even design bikes and can't figure out the reason for 29ers other than unsubstantiated hype and shoddy premise.
