Deuce - An American Hot Rod Foundation Documentary Sale Price: $24.95 |
|
No car in the history of hot rodding is more revered, talked about, and written about than the 1932 Ford. Known as the DEUCE, this car alone became THE icon of American hot rodding. Modified extensively by individual hot rodders, the DEUCE epitomized sinister good looks and raw power. It has been used by Hollywood to symbolize youthful rebellion; by rock and rollers to capture the magic of an era, and by artists as a canvas for exhibition and unique self-expression. As told by the renegade kids who gave the DEUCE its unprecedented role in American culture, this acclaimed DEUCE video is the complete story of how and why the 1932 Ford rose to the incredible prominence it still holds in automotive history and hot rod culture. Featuring historic hot rod film footage and photos from the 40's and 50's along with exclusive interviews with Billy F Gibbons, Jay Leno, Jeff Beck, Chip Foose, Lil' John Buttera, Robert Williams, Roy Brizio, Wally Parks, Alex Xydias, Steve Moal, Tony Thacker, Lorin Sorensen, Dick Messer, Robert Petersen and many more aficionados and experts. It is a film that captures the essence of a true American Icon. When the credits roll, you will start calling friends to come watch it. And you will enjoy it more the second time, and third time and so forth. We never get tired of screening it. Stephen E. Memishian, Executive Producer; Henry Astor, Producer; Anna Lee, Director. Playing Time: 50 minutes. |

LIONS THE GREATEST DRAG STRIP (Part 3/1967-'72) by Don Gillespie: Third and final video documentary on sport's most famous drag strip (Long Beach, Calif.); rare photos, film, interviews with leading pioneers. Sale Price: $22.95 |
|
Third and final episode (110-minutes) on historic Long Beach, CA drag strip features 40-plus interviews with top pioneers, including; Don Garlits, Ed Iskenderian, Hayden Proffitt, Gas Ronda, Bill "Maverick" Golden, Robert Balogh, Carl Olson, Sush Matsubara, Tom McEwen, Pat Foster, Tommy Ivo, Dale Pulde, Don Long, C. J. Hart, Larry Sutton, etc. Begins with nitro racing's version of a heavyweight bout, as Top Fuel dragsters fight the growing trend of AFX and early Funny Cars. Huge meets ensued. Innovation led to quicker ET's - and speeds. Funny Cars roared into the 7-second zone. Top Fuelers blazed past 220 miles-per-hour. With increased performance came danger. Straining clutches and superchargers resulted in spectacular fires, wheel-stands and crashes, with drivers in extreme peril. One of the more dramatic segments depicts the AHRA Grand American in early 1970, when Top Fuel legend "Big Daddy" Don Garlits lost part of his right foot in a horrific starting line transmission explosion. Graphic film of the accident surfaced only recently. Garlits recounts the incident, plus his equally stunning return months later with a rear-engine dragster that likewise changed the sport forever. Weekly campaigners included Jr. Fuel and Gas Dragsters, AA/Gas Supercharged, AA/Fuel Altered, Injected Funny Cars, plus wild exhibition vehicles. Manager C.J. Hart departed in 1971, replaced by innovator, Steve Evans, who switched from AHRA to NHRA sanction, and produced events like the giant Grand Premier, which saw the track's largest number of incidents. When noise complaints spelled the end in December 1972, Lions held the racing equivalent of Woodstock, with "The Last Drag Race", a colossal, fitting, yet tear-filled end to one of the sport's most historic, and revered tracks. |

LIONS THE GREATEST DRAG STRIP (Part One/1955-'62) DVD by Don Gillespie: Historical documentary on one of drag racing's greatest racetracks; rare film, photos and interviews with sport's pioneers List Price: $29.95 Sale Price: $22.95 |
|
This is part one (of the three-part) quintessential video documentary on the sport of drag racing's most historic quarter-mile facilities, Lions Drag Strip. It took veteran photojournalist Don Gillespie in excess of four years to compile hundreds of photos, films, research, and interviews from more than 30 individuals. The nearly two hour (1-HR, 54 MINS) production (in DVD format), details the Long Beach, CA-based track's inception in 1955 (w/Mickey Thompson as its first manager), through the lifting of the "fuel ban" in early '62. Via Thompson, Lions was the first to use electronic starting lights, was LA-based resulting in giant crowds, and played host to some of the largest meets in history, especially at a time when the sport was in its early, pioneering stages. A must have for all who raced or attended an event there, or simply ever heard about agruably the most mystic of all straight-line facilities. This is a definite keeper for lovers of nostalgia, who long for a well-done trip back to racing's yesteryear. Incredible film footage includes sport's first ever "live" TV broadcast on KTTV, including interviews with racers Allen "Lefty" Mudersbach, Jack Chrisman, Tom McEwen, Don Prudhomme, with Thompson and Bill Welch as emcees. |

The Original Hot Rodder is a biography of Bill Waddill. He was born with the need for speed like his own father, Harry Hanks, who was killed in 1928 during a dirt-track race. Bill never knew his birth father, but Harry's racing legacy lived on when Bill became a pioneer of racing in the state of Michigan; went on to set a Bonneville land speed record and several national drag racing records. Bill Waddill was the first president of the local hot rod club called the Genesee Gear Grinders in 1948 and was an active member until 1963. He competed and was very successful in many kinds of racing including early Bonneville and drag racing, Reliability Runs, Gymkhanas, the Mexican Carerra Pan-Americana, sports car road racing and off-road racing in the Mint 400 and Baja 500. He also attended many early car shows and consistently won "Best Engineered" and top honors in his class. He counted Mickey Thompson, Wally Parks and Roger Huntington among his many racing friends. |
Here are some more information for Car Nhra Hot:

The twenty years between 1945 and 1965 came to be known as the "Hot Rod Era" because the restoration of old cars became almost like the national sport of the United States. Everyone wanted a hot rod and that era spawned multiple different styles and types of hot rod cars.
"Hot Rod" is the name given to any vintage car, but it especially refers to a Ford that has been improved to enhance performance by reducing the weight of the vehicle. For this reason, most hot rods have minimalistic chassis with no roof, hood, windscreens or fenders. At times, the original engines of the car are also remove and replaced with lighter more efficient ones to raise the highest speed capacity of the vehicle. The modeling of a hot rod was considered a work of art and thus individuals loved to exhibit their re-done cars to the public. This generally happened at informal meets and short-distance, alleyway races until the year 1951. In this year, the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) came in to existence to promote hot rod drag racing as a legitimate competitive sport. Apart from a racing event, what the NHRA really created was opportunity for hot rod car shows.
Hot rod car shows occur across the United States and other parts of the world every year. The most popular events are the California Hot Rod Reunion and the National Hot Rod Reunion, both organized by the NHRA. Through exhibitions of hot rods, the shows focus on increasing the popularity of the machines. The shows feature hot rod car swap meets that help prospective buyers and sellers come together as well drag races for different classes of cars. The show is designed to be a family event with many activities such as open-air barbeques and raffle contests. At times, fun fairs based on theme cars and makeshift car memorabilia museums are held to add to the crowd's enthusiasm.
The passes for these events are generally available through on-the spot registration. The average price per day for an adult is about $50 and for a child below sixteen, it is $10.

Formula D Series Events and Places
Formula D Racing, a.k.a. Formula Drifting, is a sport that's rapidly growing in popularity. Not so long ago - only a few years - it was introduced to North America with the creation of pro drifting racing. This racing organization is also known as the Formula Drift Championship. This race includes about 50 drivers competing for the right to be called the U.S. drifting champion. Just like any other pro racing events, they take place in a few different cities at various pro race tracks.
Like all other professional racing events, you'll find that it's not an easy task to pinpoint all of the racing venues, which is also true for Formula D series. The main reason for that is that they keep changing all the time. In the future, you expect to see extra venues being added as drifting keeps on growing in popularity and becoming more of a mainstream sport. But if you do want to learn more about the venues that have been used in Formula D, pick a season and focus on those particular locales. We will be looking at the 2006 Championship season.
One of the venues is located in Sonoma, California. The name of that track is Infineon Raceway. Because of where it is located, it's growing in popularity. The location is San Francisco - only 28 miles away from the Golden Gate Bridge. Besides the Formula D, it also hosts the Indycar Series, Nascar Sprint Cup Series, National Hot Rod, American motorcycle association and NHRA Division 7. It is a year - round complex open 340 days and 50 weekends a year with 1.5 million visitors each year passing through its gates.
Formula D series also takes place at Road Atlanta. As the name suggests, it's located in Atlanta, Georgia. It is known globally as one of the premium race tracks of North America. Road Atlanta management are not resting on their laurels and continue to improve the track. With renovations done in 2004, they have added one more horseshoe turn just for the Formula D events. This turn improves on an already great track by adding one more extra degree of difficulty. Beside Formula D, this racetrack is also a host to various racing events like the Audi Driving Experience, AMA Suzuki Superbike Showdown, SCCA American Road Race of Champions and Ferrari Challenge.
Formula D series also makes a stop in Chicago, Illinois at Soldier Field - the football stadium. You might ask how is it possible to do a drifting event there. Actually, the event is staged just outside the walls of this Stadium - in the parking lot. Right before the event takes place, the lot is transformed into a great drifting race course. Even though it is technically not a track, the fan energy and enthusiasm is just the same or greater. The main reason for this event's popularity is because, apart from New Jersey, Formula D series does not have another location in the north-east area of the country.
Besides the venues that were mentioned above, the formula D series also stops in Wall New Jersey, Washington, Seattle, Long Beach and Irwindale California. In Irwindale, the event takes place at the Irwindale Speedway. In Wall, the action takes place at the Air Force Reserve Wall Speedway. In Long Beach, the event is hosted in the streets of Long Beach. Some of these events are held at well known tracks and others in city streets or parking lots.
Like we said before, the above mentioned venues were on the 2006 Formula D calendar. In a few years, extra tracks may be added or some of the old ones excluded. If you are serious about venturing out to a live event, we advise you to make sure your race schedule is updated with the most recent information available through Formula D website.

NHRA pit crew safety equipment?
While watching ESPN's funny car competition, I noticed that quite a few the pit crew members did not wear either safety glasses or hearing protection. Aren't they mancated by OSHA? These are working hot pits. I would think that someone would be paying attention to safety issues like this.
Thank you.
Osha has no mandates over them. The Nhra sets all the safety rules. OSHA, does not tell the drivers they have to wear helmets, the nhra does. They all have to sign a waiver stating they are working and driving at their own risk, similar to the release the fans sign to watch them. They are encouraged to wear ear protection, but not required.
