Viva Las Vegas [Blu-ray] List Price: $19.98 Sale Price: $7.45 |
|
It's pretty tough to beat Jailhouse Rock in terms of sheer entertainment, but Elvis lovers are particularly fond of this 1964 hit. The Big E plays race-car driver Lucky Jackson, who arrives in Las Vegas for an upcoming Grand Prix race. Lucky's car needs a new engine, so he gets a waiter job at a casino and starts working his crooning charms on Rusty Martin (Ann-Margret). It's their on-screen chemistry that makes this flick a lot of fun; Presley never had a better costar than Ann-Margret, and their race-car romance is quintessential 1960s fluff. Then there are the songs, of course, including the snappy title tune, a rockin' rendition of Ray Charles's "What'd I Say?," and "The Yellow Rose of Texas." Viva Las Vegas is one of the Elvis movies that stands the test of time, when the legend was still at his peak. And if you're wondering if the King gets his car fixed in time to win the race, well, check out the movie to find out. --Jeff Shannon In one of his biggest and best films, Elvis Presley is "just a devil with love to spare" as a race car driver looking to enter the Las Vegas Grand Prix and romancing sexy Ann-Margret. With Cesare Danova, William Demarest, and the great Jack Carter as himself. Songs include "The Lady Loves Me," "What'd I Say," and the title tune. 85 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack: English; Subtitles: English, French; featurette; more. |

Fast Company [Blu-ray] List Price: $19.98 Sale Price: $11.86 |
|
An early departure from director David Cronenberg's canon of visceral horror, 1979's Fast Company profiles one of his personal passions, racecars, in a gritty melodrama that also features exciting racetrack footage. Veteran toughguy William Smith is top-billed as a champion drag racer who clashes with the unscrupulous oil-company executive (John Saxon) who sponsors his team. Though lacking the gruesome clinical obsessions of his horror features (Cronenberg admits on the disc's commentary that the film was a tax shelter for its Canadian producers), Fast Company is also fascinated with internal machinery (here, car engines instead of human bodies), and it's easily Cronenberg's most approachable film, with plenty of automotive action alongside the solid performances (the cast includes B-movie queen Claudia Jennings in her final performance). --Paul Gaita Studio: Wea-des Moines Video Release Date: 05/19/2009 |

Here are some more information for Car Drag Race:

With the turn of the New Year comes anticipation for the beginning of the racing seasons in NASCAR and Formula One. Both have been hit by tough economic times and made radical changes to lower costs. If you thought the Car of Tomorrow was ugly in NASCAR, you have to get a gander of the new F1 cars.
Formula One doesn't begin racing till late March, but that doesn't stop teams from launching their cars starting in early January. Launching is, of course, just another way to drum up a media event for sponsors to see the new car, take plenty of pictures and publish them in periodicals around the world.
Ferrari is the first team to launch the new car this year. Ferrari has always had a sleek car of deep red, black and some white. Regardless of how your feel about the team, the colors are breathtaking and the cars are beautiful. Well, till now.
The new Ferrari, the F60, reminds one of the joke about the fact a person wasn't hit by the ugly stick, the entire tree fell on them. This is one ugly car. It starts with a front wing that is so wide it extends out to the outer edge of the front wheel. It looks bad, but is made far worse by the fact the back of the car has a wing that is very narrow. Frankly, it looks like the parts from two different cars where mashed together in a Frankenstein design.
Alas, this is not Ferrari's fault. The powers that be in Formula One have mandated new regulations designed to increase passing. The car is a reflection of those regulations and other teams have the same look based on testing photos. Still, the sheer ugliness of the car is compounded by two big concerns.
The first concern has to do with passing. The new design is supposed to make passing easier. If so, it seems an odd design. The vast majority of down force now appears to be on the front wing. As a car pulls up to a slower one, the air will be lost off the front wing. A sudden lack of down force hardly seems to be a tonic to help passing, but perhaps there is another element of the car that compensates for this.
The second concern is the sheer extension of the front wing. Formula one starts from a standing stop. The first corner is always a bang up affair - pun intended. With the new design, it seems impossible that the drivers will be able to see the ends of the wing. Given this, one can expect a bevy of crashes as front wings clip the tires and bodies of other cars. The resulting carbon fiber on the ground should make for plenty of laps behind the safety car.
How will the new car perform during the 2009 season? For the first time in a very long time, nobody really knows. Every team is starting from scratch, so the first race should be very exciting and well worth watching.

A Collaborative Site for Auto Racing
Here is a brand new site for the racing enthusiast. Racertube.com is a site dedicated to the racing circuit containing all the news that pertains to racing. For the formula I enthusiasts there is a section entirely devoted to the racing season and news about their favorite stars. There are also interesting tit bits here that you will not get any where else. Here is a Doctor speaking about the formula 1 Toyota team.
Ricardo Ceccarelli is the Doctor who travels wherever the team goes. You may have read about mechanics, engine tuners and the like but this is something refreshingly different. We think of the drivers as machines along with the snazzy machines that they drive but we fail to think of humans who need all the attention and care. He takes with him an assortment of drugs to treat the drivers wherever they are. He admits them to a hospital if the situation warrants. He maintains their health with a special mineral drink that he has developed himself. This will protect the driver from the extreme heat he has to suffer inside the formula 1 car on the circuit. Especially in circuits like BAHRAIN there is no question of cooling in the desert sun. He talks about the fluid loss that could be up to three liters in 90 minutes which may affect the psychological performance of the driver. Drinking water is the only solution, according to him.
The driver has to bear with a heat of one hundred and eighty degrees inside his car and this tortuous heat has to be tolerated for at least 90 minutes till the race is over. Secondly, muscular sprains can be developed in the legs and in the neck because of the break neck speed at which these snazzy cars are driven. This is because gravity will play its part and we have to remain conscious of that. You can not do more than two laps without training and imagine the fitness required to withstand it for 90 minutes.
The demands on the brain are something never heard of in any other sports. You can not give even a second’s rest to the brain at such high speeds and complex visual inputs.
NASCAR segment has news about the sad event where 7 spectators were injured when the car that Edward was driving just flew and hit them. Now the organizers are seriously thinking of imposing penalty on drivers who are found to commit mistakes wantonly.
Indy car segment has news items on the racing event in Kansas City. There is a piece of interesting news on all the segments like hill climb and midget. In the vintage car segment you see amusing descriptions of the cars and their owners. Drag racing is not to be left behind as this a very exciting race that requires the driver to be extremely alert. Karting and wrc are the segments that have minute details about the exacting physical standards required for the sport.
There is news about the Australian bear maker BUDWEISER planning to abandon NHRA AND SPONSORSHIP after 2009. This season will be ok for them. They seem to be hard pressed for money, it seems. Hard times get every body.
