Putting alloy wheels on your vehicle may look simple but it really isn't. A step-by-step guide should be used to do it correctly. It may take longer to do it this way but you need to take care in doing so to avoid making mistakes that could affect you negatively at a later time. It is very important to do it right when you consider how many miles you may travel on these wheels.

Before you get started on installing them, you need to check the places of each tire and match them to the right wheels. When you put them on two at a time, you should put the new wheels on the rear and put the old ones on the front. The whole point in this is because the back tires have more control over the vehicles direction. They will need to have more treads for traction on a wet road.

You should always check the manufacturer's manual to make sure the wheels fit the tires before you install them. Use hand tools to put the tires on the wheels. On flat ground or a level floor, use a jack to lift the vehicle up to an appropriate height. The best way to remove the lug nuts is with a four-way wrench, or tire iron. Although it would be faster, an impact wrench is not recommended because there is the chance that it can damage the nuts.

Next, you need see if the wheel will fit the hub. You might need to use a centering ring to make sure they both fit together properly. The wheel should fit flush up against the surface it is being mounted on and the holes should line up identical for the bolts. If they don't, you will need to call the manufacturer's customer service department. It is recommended that you do a test fit for the lugs and bolt threads before you put the wheel in place.

When you put the wheel on you need to check that there is adequate space between wheel and the brake disc to make sure there is enough room for the calipers. Then thread the lugs and make them finger-tight. There shouldn't be any resistance when you tighten them. If there is, remove them and try rethreading them but don't force them. You could risk stripping the threads.

When that is done, put the vehicle in neutral and spin the tires by hand. While they are rotating, make sure that the rim does not rub the caliper. The last step is to lower the jack and tighten the lugs with your wrench. The main thing to keep in mind is to not over-tighten the lugs to the point where they will crack or be too hard to remove again. You also need to make sure that they are not so loose that they could come off. Although it would be best to have a mechanic check the torque of the lugs, you can do it yourself if you know the specifications for your vehicle.

Go Faster With Better Brakes

If you're into fast cars and racing, you'll know that there are a lot of things you can tweak on your car to make it perform better; engine, suspension, wheel and tire modifications can all make a big difference, but one key auto part that many people overlook is the brakes. I started autocrossing two years ago in my Subaru WRX. It's a great car to learn on; the turbocharged 4-cylinder boxer engine packs enough punch to accelerate quickly and the AWD not only helps you get the car up to speed quickly, but it helps you carry the speed through the corners too. But the biggest drawback to a WRX is its brakes. It doesn't have the same 4-piston Brembo brakes that it's bigger brother, the STi, has. So after my first few autocrosses on my stock brakes, I realized they needed some love if they were going to stand up to the abuse I was giving them

Since I was only racing every other weekend, I didn't want to get anything too extreme; I needed a brake setup that was tough enough to not develop brake fade after a few hot laps, but easy enough to live with in my daily commute. So after doing some research on the internet, I found that my stock brake lines at the caliper were actually made of rubber! Rubber brake lines flex, which can add a squishy feeling to the brake pedal. So I decided to add a set of stainless steel brake lines and upgrade my brake fluid to a DOT5 racing fluid while I was at it. I also wanted the brake pads to have more initial bite after I hit the pedal, so I upgraded to a set of Hawk HP brake pads. They seemed like a good compromise to me as they are marketed as a performance street pad and I had read a lot of good reviews on them.
After getting these parts installed, I went for a quick drive and I could immediately tell the difference. The brake pedal was much firmer and the brakes were much more responsive to my pedal inputs. At my next autocross, the improvements in my lap times proved to me that improving your braking system really can make you faster! The better pedal feedback and higher friction brake pads allowed me to brake later, producing a higher average lap speed and slightly faster lap times. Plus I was able to do all three laps without experiencing any brake fade, which meant my brakes still performed well when my tires were hot and sticky. I certainly wasn't the fastest person out there, but I could tell that upgrading the brakes & brake rotors had made a big improvement to the way it performed on the track.

are the posi clutches in my rear end bad?

lately when i hold the brake and hit the gas, only the right wheel is spinning. but sometimes, they both spin. when i try to do a burnout, or launch for a drag race, only one wheel spins. but the other day, i held on the brakes and just slammed on the gas, and i layed rubber, 2 thick black lines. is this normal or do i have a problem? the posi used to work, i haven't abused it to the point where it should have been damaged. could it be low fluid or something like that?
its an 88 Camaro. it DOES have a limited slip. i think its a 7.75 rear end.

that is what a limited slip rear end is sumpose to do. when one tire has less grip it spins
In automotive applications, a limited slip differential (LSD) is a modified or derived type of differential gear arrangement that allows for some difference in rotational velocity of the output shafts, but does not allow the difference in speed to increase beyond a preset amount. In an automobile, such limited slip differentials are sometimes used in place of a standard differential, where they convey certain dynamic advantages, at the expense of greater complexity. The main advantage of a limited slip differential is found by considering the case of a standard (or "open") differential where one wheel has no contact with the ground at all. In such a case, the contacting wheel will remain stationary, and the non-contacting wheel will rotate freely– the torque transmitted will be equal at both wheels, but will not exceed the threshold of torque needed to move the vehicle, thus the vehicle will remain stationary. In everyday use on typical roads, such a situation is very unlikely, and so a normal differential suffices. For more demanding use however, such as driving off-road, or for high performance vehicles, such a state of affairs is undesirable, and the LSD can be employed to deal with it. By limiting the velocity difference between a pair of driven wheels, useful torque can be transmitted as long as there is some friction available on at least one of the wheels.

The only cars I know of that used the Gov Lock were some of the mid '80s Camaros and Firebirds with the 7.5 rear ends. The one with the weights is a Governor Lock. It is designed for trucks and works very well when used for what it was designed for. It has a lot of small parts that break when abused. They even break sometimes when not abused. I have rebuilt many of these and the parts are not cheap. The posi is a lot more durable for performance cars. If you have a problem telling the difference

BMW Takes It Back At The Concorso d'Eleganza, Breaks Out The Old School
It's baAAaaaaaaAack. You may remember this little concept back from 2006. Well, BMW decided to unearth it again for another showing before this year's Mille Miglia race, which begins in 10 days.
