Rain Man (Special Edition) List Price: $14.98 Sale Price: $3.98 |
|
movie Rain Man is the kind of touching drama that Oscars are made for--and, sure enough, the film took Academy honors for best picture, director, screenplay, and actor (Dustin Hoffman) in 1988. Hoffman plays Raymond, an autistic savant whose late father has left him $3 million in a trust. This gets the attention of his materialistic younger brother, a hot-shot LA car dealer named Charlie (Tom Cruise) who wasn't even aware of Raymond's existence until he read his estranged father's will. Charlie picks up Raymond and takes him on a cross-country journey that becomes a voyage of discovery for Charlie, and, perhaps, for Raymond, too. Rain Man will either captivate you or irritate you (Raymond's sputtering of repetitious phrases is enough to drive anyone crazy), but it is obviously a labor of love for those involved. Hoffman had been attached to the film for many years, as various directors and writers came and went, but his persistence eventually paid off--kind of like Raymond in Las Vegas. Look for director Barry Levinson in a cameo as a psychiatrist near the end of the film. --Jim Emerson |

Memoirs of the Prodigal Son: the Road to Redemption "Fifteen Years in Prison and Beyond" Sale Price: $12.95 |
|
Memoirs of the Prodigal Son: the Road to Redemption:"Fifteen Years in Prison and Beyond"; is an ispirational saga of one man's spiritual odyssey . . . an epic tale of his Christian upbringing, his fall from grace, his quest for redemption and ultimately his spiritual Resurrection. It's a powerful message of hope and triumph through obedient faith in the Word of God. The author, John C. Dortch, is a man whose humble beginnings are deeply rooted in a childhood and young adult life that were punctuated with promises of extraordinary life-time achievements. He was born on July 19, 1945, his mother's birthday, the youngest of four children, and the son of a Baptist minister, who only had the benefit of an eighth grade education. Despite being a scholar athlete, a Howard University graduate, a U.S. Army Officer, decorated Vietnam veteran, and top agent for New York Life Ins. Co., his life went spiraling out of control. He had lost his way. John's mother, Julia, shares anh incredible experience that she had during her pregnancy with him. She recalls that one hight as he lay awake, resting quietly in the dark, in the fornt bedroom of the family's home, a sphere of light, like a miniature moon, came orbiting through the window, revolving on its axis. Too frighten to move, she watched in awe as the light touched her stomach, and then, just as it had miraculously entered, it exited the window. Being a devout Christian, Julia was convinced that herr vision was a Divine omen that John would be graced with a very special mission in life, that he had been chosen to withness and to minister to others. Twenty-nine years later, John would have the identical vcision as he lay in his bunk in a dark jail cell, awaiting transfer to a maximum security federal penitentiary to serve a life sentence for murder. John's revelation was the beginning of a spiritual odyssey that would not only transform his life, but would also have a profound impact on the lives of others whom he would encounter along his life's journey. In fulfillment of his mother's prophecy, John became a powerful witness of the unconditional love of Jesus Christ and the all-sufficiency of His redeeming grace. After serving fifteen years in prison, John was paroled and returned to Washington, DC, where he went to work as the business manager for Covenant Baptist Church. A year and a half later, he enrolled in the District of Columbia School of Law. After graduating law school, he passed bar examinations in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and West Virginia. Later he served as an adjunct professor of Juvenile Justice at the Institute for Public Safety and Justice at the University of the District of Columbia; as Executive Director of the Time Dollar Youth Court, a diversion program for first-time juvenile offenders, and later as the Executive Director of the Violence Free Zone Demonstration Initiative at the National Center for Neighborhood Enterprises. During an appearance on the Today Show with Katie Couric, John vowed to dedicate his life in service to those in need. After his mother's death, he returned to his hometown to restore the family's residence and to reconnect with community where he grew up. He reinstated his membership in the historic First African Baptist Church of Beaufort, South Carolina , first becoming and ordained deacon and is now an ordained minister. Most of his time is now devoted to ministering to the elderly in various ways. Upon reflection, John would later muse that, from a spiritual perspective, his time in prison has been, perhaps, the most illuminating period in his life. Other than assisting the elderly, his other competing passions are advocating for at-risk youths, ex-offenders, and veterans suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. John emphatically, proclaims, "We are our brothers' and sisters' keepers!" |

Richly talented Pop artist Michael Buble has released him latest album titled Michael Buble and Wow! It's really a good one.
Michael Buble will grab your attention right from the outset with Fever and won't let go until the very last note of the very last song That's All, which by the way is another great track.
One of the refreshingly nice things about this CD is the way all of the participating artists seem to be really enjoying themselves. Combine that with the overall presentation and you've got one of Michael Buble's most impressive releases ever.
If you're even mildly into Pop music you'll enjoy this CD. Overall Michael Buble is an outstanding release. I give it my double thumbs up. You will not be disappointed with one single track.
While the entire CD is outstanding some of my favorites are track 3 - Kissing A Fool, track 5 - How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, and track 9 - Put Your Head On My Shoulder
My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 7 - You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine. Wow!

Why ENERGY STAR makes dollars and sense
Most people want to know what they can do to make their dollar go further, particularly when purchasing household appliances. While most consumers have their eyes on the price tag, it really should be on how much it costs to power those appliances, and that’s where ENERGY STAR comes in.
ENERGY STAR is the international symbol of premium energy efficiency. Natural Resources Canada's Office of Energy Efficiency (OEE) promotes the international ENERGY STAR symbol in Canada and monitors its use. Typically, ENERGY STAR products offer 20 to 30 percent savings on your energy bills. DirectBuy of Ottawa, the leading home improvement and furnishings club with direct insider prices, sells a wide ride range of ENERGY STAR products to help members save.
“The irony about ENERGY STAR products is the program itself was set up to combat the negative effect that running our appliances was having on our environment,” said Lise Girard, owner of DirectBuy of Ottawa. “While most people do want to minimize their carbon footprint, in today’s economy, it’s just as much about how much you can save by having appliances that run more efficiently.”
So, how much can you save by purchasing ENERGY STAR appliances? Here’s a small sampling:
-
Clothes washers – replacing a 10-year-old washing machine with a new ENERGY STAR machine can save a household more than $160 per year.
-
Dishwashers – ENERGY STAR dishwashers use 41 percent less energy and water than non-ENERGY STAR washers. That translates to more than $30 a year on your utility bill.
-
Refrigerators – a typical two-door, freezer-on-top refrigerator can cost more than $110 per year to run. Upgrading to ENERGY STAR can knock $30 per year off that, resulting in savings of nearly $400 in just five years.
-
Home electronics – the average household spends more than $100 per year powering electronics devices in “standby” mode. ENERGY STAR products use less energy when in standby.
-
LED Lighting – requires 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs and lasts 25 times longer. According to Natural Resources Canada, LED lighting can last more than 25,000 hours than its incandescent counterparts or more than 22 years!
In addition to those savings, Canadians who replace their cooling or heating systems with ENERGY STAR systems are eligible for grants up to $5,000 from the federal government. Grant information can be found on the Office of Energy Efficiency Web site at oee.nrcan.gc.ca/.
Canadian residents who replace their heating systems might also be eligible for a Home Renovation Tax Credit for the 2009 tax year. The credit applies to expenditures more than $1,000 and less than $10,000, with the credit being no more than $1,350 per family. For eligibility guidelines, please visit the Home Tax Renovation Credit page on the Canadian Revenue Agency’s Web site at cra-arc.gr.ca.
“As a company that deals specifically in home improvement, we often hear the expression that this project will pay for itself, but that usually means at resale of your home,” said Girard. “When it comes to ENERGY STAR products, they literally do pay for themselves over time—without selling your home—and lessen the impact on the environment. That’s really an unbeatable combination.”
